THE sex shop that opened six weeks ago in Poole High Street to a barrage of complaints, has been granted a licence which enables it to sell more explicit material.
Purrfectly Discreet’s application, which allows it to sell DVDs restricted to over 18s, items used for sexual activity or acts of force or restraint, attracted 63 letters of objection from residents – and 12 letters of support.
Borough of Poole’s licensing committee granted the application for the shop at 82 High Street with a number of special conditions.
Chairman Cllr John Rampton, said: “We carefully considered both the application and the objections received, but felt there was insufficient evidence to warrant the refusal of the application.
“As a result of the application’s approval, we now have more control over the premises than we did before. In addition the conditions imposed on the licence address some of the objections raised by local people.”
Cllr Chris Wilson, who represents the area said: “Whilst we do not want empty shops in the High Street I really feel that this shop is inappropriate in an area where we are hoping to encourage tourists and families to visit.” Poole Old Town Conservation Group chairman, Bill Constance said: “Tourists and families must be encouraged into the High Street. The shop, as presented will deter the footfall that is essential for the long term viability of the town centre.”
However shop owner John Budimir thanked the council for its “fair and open minded manner”.
He said: “I hope that by my creating the most female friendly, couple friendly, gay and lesbian friendly adult store in Dorset and Hampshire it will be soon looked upon as one of the historic town attractions.”
His solicitor, Sandra Graham of HLF Law added: “I know this is an emotive subject but the Licensing Committee have to balance the interests of local business in the town with that of some local people who have objected.
“It is not always an easy task.
“There were a considerable number of letters in support of the applicant too.”
The conditions include installing a fully operational CCTV system, access doors shall remain closed, all windows to be frosted to at least two-thirds high, no photos, text, drawings or images to be displayed, warning signs on the front doors and curtains in the windows to be drawn at all times.
The only items for sale immediately inside the shop and in the first room should be lingerie only and no sex toys, dvds, videos or forms of electronic media should be on sale or displayed in the first room.

"The sex shop that opened six weeks ago in Poole High Street to a barrage of complaints" Unless my memory is playing tricks most of the comments in this forum at the time were positive so maybe 'barrage of support' is equally appropriate.

For those that are complaining - it's really quite straightforward - don't go in the shop! In the days where Fifty Shades of Grey is one of the most popular books why not take advantage of that. I reckon there will probably be more Councillor's shopping in there - they appear to be a kinky bunch.

What do you think a sex shop is going to sell, M&S Y-fronts?

But who are complaining, where are they?As muscliffman pointed out when the story of this shop came up before there was hardly any comments against it

From what I can tell, there are no objections to this, and rightly so.
Although, I have to admit I'm surprised there is a market for sex shops on the high street these days what with the ease and online buying. Much more discreet.
The last thing you want is to walk out of a high street sex shop with some chains and a rubber fist under your arm and bump into your next door neighbour coming out of the bank or whatever.
Much safer to obtain through the post.

Cllr Xena Dion should go, at least while she's tied up there she wont be doing damage anywhere else.
Down with this sort of thing... Careful now!
As per all the posts on the previous article (where everyone bar a couple seemed to be in favour of this 'abomination'), children won't be allowed in, nor will anyone abduct them and force them to see the contents of the store. The frontage will be tastefully done as per this article, therefore children won't be enticed as they come of age.
And as common sense would show, you don't have to go in if it's not for you! I walk past a bookies, a pub and a strip club most days, but I don't feel obliged to go in there because of it's presence, nor do I feel villified because of it being there. People won't go in a sex shop if they don't have an interest, and people won't be deterred from visiting the high street just because there's a shop in there they won't go in.
Get a grip, OHEC, and all you NIMBY types!

What a strange outlook. Why would people that don't care about the shop and are more than happy with it being there, such as myself, write a letter supporting it?
It's like something on TV generating a few complaints and suggesting that the majority are against it because no one could be bothered to write a letter saying how great it was.

Not objecting is not a sign of apathy! What a pathetic argument! Some of us are just too busy to keep our ear close enough to the ground about all of the comings and goings. I have no problem with the existence of a sex shop in the High Street, some people need some spice in their life right?! What I do object to is the tasteless, unsophisticated, seedy, sexist window dressing. If your brand image is discretion, why can't they be perfectly discrete? What a shame! Especially for the kids! Thoughtless . . .

I think you will find that not objecting to something, because you are too busy with other evidently far more important things, is the very definition of 'apathy'!
Kids today know more than many of us about the products inside these shops, these harmless roadside displays are of little interest to them.

So in an election, you're saying that if 63 people vote Tory, 12 vote Labour and 150,000 don't bother to vote, it proportionally represents that a majority of the 150075 in that constituency support the Tories?
I think you'll find that means the majority of people don't really care either way. Same applies for this shop... Most people aren't going to write a letter of support or objection every time something is proposed, unless they feel strongly about it.
Based on the letters sent; of the whole of Poole and those who come there, only 75 people actually have any feeling about this one way or another.
Now given your above statement I question your own fitness to run an election... though it would make you a perfect candidate to stand in one ;-)

I see an Empty spot where Fishy Fishy used to be - Maybe Mr Budimir should expand his empire and open another shop there on the Quay for the well-heeled yacht crowd that PHC is desperately trying to attract. Soon the High Street will only house betting shops, charity shops and sex shops and no one will pay the car parking fees for those. The council has shot itself in the foot again :(

Perhaps ignorant in this case, and apathetic as a consequence. I would have preferred to be informed and would have certainly acted. Thinking of our young children as being informed about this adult world is dreadfully sad, and says more about our society/community. I actively try and protect my young children and would prefer that they are educated correctly. As i said in my argument, I have absolutely no objection to the presence of the shop, I just think it could be done a lot better and is precisely the reason that kids are so savvie and doesn't male it right. 'Harmless' in you eyes, I respect your opinion.

Debatable if I may suggest. If you take the current Government - and I and many others wish you would, the 'majority' of Britains did NOT abstain or vote for it. The whole system is inadequate but changing it will disadvantage the very same people who can prevent those changes, so............

Puzzled why a sex shop needs an additional licence to sell bondage gear? Bonkers. In fact if a sex shop wasn't selling bondage kit as part of its offer, surely it would be in breach of trade descriptions?

No sex please, we're British!
As you rightly ask, what are we protecting our kids from? They can't go in there or see the content of the shop, should they happen to see the inside due to someone opening the door, all they'll see is some lingerie, as per the approved layout of the shop!
And quite rightly stated as well that there are far more serious things to worry about (terrorists, global warming, whether wind turbines will affect our house prices etc).

You say that we as a nation do NOT observe proportional representation. That is correct and I congratulate you on your knowledge of our rather outdated voting system. We as a nation also do NOT hold a public ballot every time someone wants to open a shop on the high street, and if we did then they could use whatever voting system we wanted. AFC Bournemouth held a ballot of ten options about a proposed club song a few months back, and the total number of votes in was less than the capacity of the stadium by a clear margin - so quite rightly the idea was dropped, on the basis that the 'winning' entry's votes accounted for less than 20% of the total votes cast. If it had been implemented, over 80% of regular attendees would have been made to hear something they either voted against or weren't interested in initially.
Sadly the same is the way with the government as most people didn't vote for the deluded idiots currently in power. You also can't really say that 75 people out of the 148,100 people living in Poole (at the last census) having a point of view on this is a real representation of what everyone wants or doesn't want.
There isn't a vote cast on this nor are the number of letters really binding at the end of the day when that few people bother to write in, so your argument, in summary, is invalid.

63 written letter of objection ... 12 written letters in support ..... over FIVE times as many against the shop and the stupid Council grant a licence ... how does that work??? Must be a bung ... someone must play football!!!

Thoughtless . . .
Kids today know more than many of us about the products inside these shops, these harmless roadside displays are of little interest to them.
Maybe its you are protecting yourself...from embarrassing questions etc?
We live in the 21st century & have to cope with far more serious things than a sex shop opening on the high street. Well at least most of us do.
Anyway, no one is forced to enter the premises. Brits STILL getting all hung up on sex!
Hello 21st Century!
I'm all for it, as per my previous two posts! Just because it sits low on the grand schemes of things, doesn't mean we can't have an opinion/debate . . . otherwise people wouldn't have bothered to comment in the first place. Thanks for the lecture by the way but I'm very comfortable with my stance on this. Tasteful shop front please.
