FINAL preparations are underway for the popular Milton Abbas Street Fair as the village prepares to welcome thousands of visitors.

The biennial event that takes people back to the 18th Century celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and organisers are reporting plenty of interest.

Chairman Nigel Hodder said over 140 stalls and 20 entertainers are lined up for the Echo-backed fair and promised a varied programme including Dorset folk music from local group the Muckspreaders and activities for youngsters.

The opening of the fair at 11am will see a re-enactment depicting Lord and Lady Milton, who had the old town of Middleton destroyed in 1773 before the model village of Milton Abbas was built to house estate workers.

The event is based upon the original fair that used to take place in Middleton on the feast of St Sampson.

Mr Hodder said many locals would be dressing up for the occasion and visitors were encouraged, though not compelled, to join in.

He added that the last three years had attracted in excess of 7,000 people and he was hoping for dry weather to ensure another healthy turnout.

Mr Hodder said another sign of the event's popularity was the success of its Facebook page, that has attracted more than 180 ‘likes’ and plenty of positive feedback.

He said: “It's about an 18th Century street fair embracing social networking and 21st Century technology.”

The fair runs until 5pm with entry by donation and free parking being available at either end of the village.
