ONLOOKERS thought they were seeing double when two silver Audis crashed on a Purbeck road at lunchtime yesterday.
Traffic on Kings Road West in Swanage ground to a halt at around 1.10pm after one Audi ended up on top of another convertible model. Shocked witnesses described the freak crash as “an Audi sandwich.”
Emergency services were alerted following reports of the two-car collision.
But when police officers arrived it became apparent one car had collided with a lookalike parked vehicle before driving on top of it.
No-one was injured in the accident but police were forced to close the road until a recovery vehicle could remove the Audi on top, which was registered to a Leicester company. Police closed the road between Victoria Avenue and Court Road until 3pm.
One flabbergasted witness, who asked not to be named, said: “No-one is quite sure how this happened, but it looked like a rather expensive Audi sandwich.”
And Jason Haixelden, proprietor of nearby Buddies B & B, said: “I saw the cars while I was driving and took a detour. The road was closed off for a while. I’ve no idea how the accident happened. It’s bizarre to say the least.”
