CHILDREN will soon be able to travel to school more safely in Broadstone if proposals for traffic calming measures get the green light.

A new 20mph limit is set to be introduced around Broadstone First School after more than 270 parents and residents signed a petition calling for the speed to be reduced from 30mph in Station Approach, Moor Road and Wenworth Drive.

Head teacher at the school Rhonda Moore said: “We're really pleased about the introduction of the 20 mph limit around the school. Anything that protects our children and ensures a safer journey to and from school is hugely welcomed.

“We're also grateful to the parents who petitioned for the limit. The petition was a response to parents seeing drivers being reckless on Station Approach. They decided to be proactive and do all they could to make their community safer. I know so many of our families are pleased with the outcome too.”

The proposals are set to be advertised soon as part of a public consultation, and at the same time the council will advertise plans for double yellow lines near Broadstone Middle School, as agreed at the recent Broadstone, Merley and Bearwood Area Committee meeting.

The no parking zone has been proposed along the northern side of Dunnyeats Road between Tudor Road and Lower Golf Links Road after residents expressed concerns that parking presented a danger for pupils walking along this route on their way to the two Broadstone schools, and also made it difficult for them to use their driveways.

Lib Dem ward councillor Vikki Slade who backed parents and helped raise the petition told the Echo she hoped residents would get behind the measures, which she hoped would encourage more parents to leave their cars at home.

“We need to move away from parents driving children to school if the children are old enough to walk or cycle,” she added. “If the roads are safer they should choose to do that.”
