A 57-YEAR-OLD man had to remain in prison for an extra week due to the limited number of rooms available in bail hostels.

Stephen Lacey, aged 57, of Buchan Drive Kingsway, Quedgeley, is accused of breaching a restraining order, common assault and two counts of assault, all against his wife, Sheila Lacey.

Lacey pleaded not guilty to the offences at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 10.

At the time, a bail request was denied due to the fact that bail hostels across the country were full.

Another bail request was submitted at Stroud Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, however this was also denied because the only room available was in Scarborough.

Graham Daniel, for the defence, said: "Even though there is a room now available my client has made it clear to me that it would be impossible for him to get to Scarborough."

Chairman of the bench Penny Hall decided the court was unable to proceed with the bail application and adjourned the hearing until today, Wednesday, by which time a room may have become available.
