Andrew Gale made his second century in less than a week and Adil Rashid maintained his excellent form as Yorkshire compiled a formidable first-innings total on the second day of their LV= County Championship match against Middlesex at Lord’s.

Gale scored 103 and Rashid 72 as the visitors were bowled out for 390, before Steve Patterson had Sam Robson caught by Adam Lyth as Middlesex reached 16-1.

Unfortunately bad light and rain then wiped out the last 36.4 overs of the day to leave a positive outcome to the Division One contest in the balance.

Yet the morning had begun badly for the White Rose county as first-day centurion Alex Lees was caught behind by John Simpson off the first ball of the session bowled by James Harris.

Lees’ departure for his overnight tally of exactly 100 was swiftly followed by that of Joe Sayers when he was lbw for just one to a good delivery from Tim Murtagh, leaving Yorkshire on 220-4.

However, in-form pair Rashid and Gale then shared an enterprising 109-run stand in just 24 overs for the fifth wicket.

Rashid reached his half-century with a whipped four off Gareth Berg and Gale got to his second successive century with a square drive off the same bowler.

Two overs later, Gale – having batted two minutes short of 14 hours for 375 runs in the last week – was lbw to Ollie Rayner.

Yorkshire went into lunch needing 19 runs off three overs to collect their fourth batting bonus point.

Their main hope of achieving this goal rested with Rashid, who was batting fluently before the break.

But there was disappointment in store for the all-rounder, who was lbw to Harris for 72 in the third over after the restart. Rashid’s batting average has now dropped to a mere 145.25.

Richard Pyrah was caught at slip off Harris four balls later and there followed a somewhat careful period of play in which the Yorkshire tail sought to build a more substantial first-innings total from a base of 345-7.

In the event they added a further 45 runs, Liam Plunkett making 26, as Harris, Rayner and Tim Murtagh finished with three wickets apiece for Middlesex.
