A SEX shop has opened in the middle of Poole’s High Street opposite a school uniform outlet.
Purrfectly Discreet, which opened on Thursday, has an over 18s warning on the door, and two large images of models in lingerie in the windows.
Yesterday shoppers and traders expressed their shock at the appearance of the store selling sex toys, clothing and accessories in the middle of the shopping strip, flanked by retailers including PMG Schoolware and a knitting wool shop.
Yet its owner already has plans to expand, and has applied to Borough of Poole for a sex shop licence to enable him to sell explicit R18 rated DVDs.
The shop at 82 High Street is in an already run-down part of town known for empty units, charity shops and cut price retailers, as well as problems with on-street drinking, drugs and begging.
Its appearance has raised fresh fears for the area, which is a walkthrough for tourists heading to and from the picturesque old town and quay.
Paul Gelernter, MD of PMG Schoolware, said he was ‘very disappointed’ about its position opposite his shop for school age children.
“It definitely has an effect on how that part of the high street is perceived – families will think twice before coming along here,” he added. “When people ask for directions to the schoolwear shop I don’t think I’m going to be happy to say go along to the sex shop and cross the road.”
Another nearby retailer, who asked not to be named, added: “The shops we’ve got are things like tattooists, gaming, pawn shops. It’s getting very sleazy.”
Ward councillor and former mayor Carol Evans said: “We want the high street to be a nice place for families – for me this is the death knell.”
Jonathan Sibbett, chairman of Poole Town Centre Management Board, said it would be ‘detrimental’ to their plans to ‘enhance the appeal’ of the high street.
“We feel that this shop will not fit in with the mix of current retailers and therefore affect the achievement of our aims.” Owner of Purrfectly Discreet John Budimir, 31, from Bournemouth, who also has a sex shop in Southend-on-Sea, told the Echo he had spent £100,000 on fitting it out, and wanted it to be ‘the best looking shop in Poole’. He added: “So many other licences have been granted in this area – you’ve got pubs, betting shops, a strip club and bar a few doors down – that’s why we chose this area.”
His licence application is now subject to a 28-day consultation until July 9, after which it will go before the licensing committee.

Oh my goodness, shock horror! A sex shop near a children's clothing shop - the owners of this establishment will no doubt drag children into their store and expose them to all sorts of sleaze whatever next!

Nimby's what is the problem? It's you who have the problem. From the outside you can't see anything that would offend, you see more in some of the underware shop or departments in town than you see in this shop window. He wouldn't be in business if there were not people who wanted this type of thing (I'm not one of them) but my moto is live and let live.

Good for you John, about time there was a shop opening rather than closing!
As for not fitting in, have you had a look at the high street? it's a dump! the majority of the other shops are either empty or charity shops.

I would have thought the " problems with on-street drinking, drugs and begging" were more of a treat to the school uniform shop than a sex shop that retails goods, not sex services!

The research evidence is clear:
-shops such as these pressurise women and girls to behave in ways that damages their self-esteem
-they massively reinforce gender inequality
- they encourage men to sexually objectify women and girls.
Is this really what we want anywhere on Poole High Street, let alone opposite a schoolwear shop?

So by viewing the outside of the shop, where they see as much as they do on the cover of a magazine in the newsagents or in an episode of any soap, they'll immediately be corrupted and affected by the immorality and sin contained within?
Does this mean if they see a pub near their uniform shop they'll become alcoholics, or if a betting shop opened across the way they'll get gambling addictions?
The mini fit of hysteria over this shop is pathetic. And can I ask, at this unnamed shopkeeper who said the area was becoming sleazy because there are tattooists, how that's sleazy? They put inked designs on your skin, not take you to sex parties or sell drugs.

There's also an off-license that sells cigarettes, alcohol and sweets. WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

Of course reputable sex shops demean women, just ask the multi-millionaire female boss of that successful High Street retail chain Ann Summers!
More to the point on recent evidence the poor innocent little children might have a lot more to fear if a place of worship opened up nearby.
Adult High Street outlets also include Bookies, Pubs and Off Licences, I fail to see any worthwhile issue here.
Good luck to the proprietor - at least his customers will be grown ups unlike some of the immature attitudes surfacing here.

People are so old fashioned and prissy. Who cares if there's a sex shop opened up? Not me and not lots of other broad minded people. Like lots of others have said, it's no worse than the drug dealers and cigarettes and alcohol being sold. At least you're not allowed in there if you are under 18 what's the big deal. If you don't like it then don't go in there and stop whining. Go and shop at the Tesco's down at Sandbanks instead :)

Oh for goodness sake - he has paid his rates, he has every right to be there just as the uniform shop has. Why dont people protest about the uniform shop remaining open then and tell their owners to move somewhere else? Besides, uniform shops are so over priced, what scares people away from uniform shops is not the sex shop next door, it is their ridiculous prices!

I don't understand the point of this story either.
It comes across as some weird sensationalist headline to somehow associate children with sex?!
Theres an adult shop next to a cloths shop.
Thats it.
So what.
Is the implication that children go and buy their own uniforms and may accidently wander into the wrong shop?

Echo - You are the biggest bunch of idiots I have ever come across, how to try & put people out of business when already the high street stores are suffering! So what if he has opened a sex shop. Your wording is terrible and you try embarrassingly to make it so dramatic it is laughable. Are your reporters failed comedians?

The only 'shocking' element here is that an Echo reporter deemed it worthy of reporting. Forming an opinion is one thing - paraded it as fact in order to muster up hysteria is desperate journalism.

It's not as if the two shops aren't completely unrelated - visit the sex shop and 5 years later you could be visiting the school uniform shop.
If anything there should be a mothercare between them.

Why mention the wool shop, but bearing does it have on the other shop. We were discussing it in the wool shop only last Sunday and we decided that perhaps they might like some knitted or crochet willy warmers!!!

Despite all the banter, that part of Town should be a jewel, pedestrianised, and fitting for the holiday trade we depend upon, and locals alike.
A sex shop will undoubtedly deter any family orientated businesses opening up there.

What an absolute waste of news!!!
It is an adult shop!!
A sex shop??? it is not a shop you pay for SEX! It is a shop you will purchase items of an adult choice and life style.
I think it is brilliant that this young person is opening a shop in a area that is losing its way.
There are bars, gambling shops, tattoo shops, off licences and a strip bar all in this area and this person (John) is getting a hard time!!!
This reporter is a joke to the paper!!!

Why would it be a deterrent? Because there are people that frequent this shop that are open about having sex? Shocking!

If you had read the reports you would have noticed that sex shops are part of a pornified culture, that also includes brothels, strip clubs etc. We all know that the 'explicit R18 rated DVDs' that the shop is planning to sell are about objectified, and often violent sex, which consumers then inflict on their partners. They are not about loving relationships.

My reference to 'Ann Summers' did not say anything about the founder of the brand, I was referring of course to Jacqueline Gold a lady who has been Chief Executive of, and the recognised driving force behind, the 'Anne Summers' brand since the late 'eighties. So your point about the truth is what please?

My reference to 'Ann Summers' did not say anything about the founder of the brand, I was referring of course to Jacqueline Gold a lady who has been Chief Executive of, and the recognised driving force behind, the 'Anne Summers' brand since the late 'eighties. So your point about the truth is what please?
What a load if tosh ! It's 2013 not 1913. Poole needs shoppers and this is a shop regardless of its product. Getting the drunks and drug users that scare people away off the street.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SHOP, DON'T GO IN IT !!!

May i suggest that you are a prude and need to get a life, mooninpisces?

Nimby's what is the problem? It's you who have the problem. From the outside you can't see anything that would offend, you see more in some of the underware shop or departments in town than you see in this shop window. He wouldn't be in business if there were not people who wanted this type of thing (I'm not one of them) but my moto is live and let live.
I cant agree more, whats wrong with people? these protester probably do a lot more "behind closed doors" when the kids are asleep.......bless them .
But : The shop at 82 High Street is in an already run-down part of town known for empty units, charity shops and cut price retailers, as well as problems with on-street drinking, drugs and begging. WHATS THAT GOT TO DO WITH IT? since when is it sleezy to have fun ? get a grip!

I don't know which is more shocking, the opening of this shop, or the complacency of most of the commenters above in the face of the pornification of society and the damage it is inflicting on all of us, women, men and children.
Would you care to point out where in these reports you've quoted there is a reference to sex shops?
Where to begin? Apart from the fact that the rules governing R18 videos ban anything to do with violent sex (unlike, say, a search on google) it's clear from the article that selling videos is incidental to the main business, which is selling devices to ladies that reduce the role of men to doing the DIY. Devices that allow women to, umm, DIY...
Shame the Bournemouth Echo has in the last year followed the Dorset and Southampton Echo down the "Isn't anything to do with sex is shocking" route. Ironic when the only stable sector of classified advertising in the paper is the adult chat phone lines. Still at least some of the comments on here have been hilarious. Down with this sort of thing indeed!

What planet are you on? Have a look around you; sexualisation of our society is rife EVERYWHERE. Look at the photos shops use to sell clothes now, people on TV, people in magazines, music videos, the clothes people wear, lyrics in songs... need I go on?
All that and it's the fault of sex shops?
How does a sex shop objectify a woman either? Those shops just as much sell gay **** and movies for the enjoyment of women, and the items sold in these shops are often for a woman's self use as much as it is for male gratification.
Welcome to the 21st Century.

Your reports are based on circumstantial evidence and do not really prove anything.
Your references to the shop selling violent material is hyperbole as you could not know this unless you enter the shop.
By your comments, it seems you are trying to maintain a morale high ground which is great...but when it is backed up with no evidence and reports that slag off the industry rather than identify hard facts, can you see why people cannot understand your comments.
You do not have to enter the shop. You to view ****. If you find sex degrading you do not have to do it but if you cannot prove that this causing a problem, then it is your opinion but not fact.

To me this sounds like the people at the echo don't have sex. Better advise those people not to take their kids through M&S as this also has photos of women in lingerie!
As for the on street drinking begging and drugs - surely the shop owner shouldn't be promoting sex around these people they might do more drink & drugs if they have sex.... ...come on echo, this article is so unprofessional I am not sure how this writer even has a job, they should be promoting business at least John wants to invest in the area and quite simply if someone doesn't like the shop don't go in it. I say job well done John, keep opening stores and then you may be accepted the say way as Ann Summers is... which, if this was them, would probably be advising their legal to contact the echo right about now....

A reputable business ran by professionals with experience in the market (makes a change from most other shops), the shop has obviously been carefully designed & marketed to high class quality & completely suitable for the high street (no products are viewable from the street, its discreet as the name states), best wishes to John + the business & its success. X
P.s. School shops ridiculously high prices are the more inappropriate... Along with the echos **** poor articles...
p.p.s. issues that need to be address with the high street are the drink & drug problems, not businesses which will benefit the area & economic climate.

I'm a 20 something lady, and have just visited this shop. It's a beautifully presented modern shop with very friendly knowledgeable staff. Their vast range of products are far superior (and cheaper) than Ann Summers. It did not feel seedy or "wrong", nor did I feel objectified. Shame there's a big tree in front of the shop front obscuring it's presence. My partner is not going to be subjecting me to sex of a violent graphic nature, but instead we shall enjoy the purchases in a very healthy and natural way. After all, isn't that how all of us got here? Including the few misguided, misinformed commenters. Long live the Poole sex shop! :-)

There are adult shops dotted all over Bournemouth including HUGE Ann Summers in Commercial Road.Anyone who thinks a shop that children are not even permitted to enter will affect them in any way is crazy. It's only the adults who are shocked, I expect the kids would just giggle as they walked past and that would be it. Get over it.

-shops such as these pressurise women and girls to behave in ways that damages their self-esteem
-they massively reinforce gender inequality
- they encourage men to sexually objectify women and girls.
Is this really what we want anywhere on Poole High Street, let alone opposite a schoolwear shop?
What about the clothes on sale in primark and other places where they sell padded bras and revealing and suggestive clothes for under 12 year olds? What about teen magazines they have slim girls in and that have make up on wont these make our young girls have high expectations as well and damage their self esteem?
If this shop has nothing untoward on in the window i dont see a problem.

Yes, the clothes in Primark and the teen magazines are also damage the self-esteem of young girls. That doesn't make a sex shop on the High Street any more acceptable - they are all aspects of the insidious pornification of society. Isn't it time we called a halt, before more damage is done?

Why would it be a deterrent? Because there are people that frequent this shop that are open about having sex? Shocking!
Deliberately obtuse?
That part ogf the high street is one of the last parts of Old Poole, as said, it could be a jewel, or it could become just another faceless road in any nameless town, make it a conservation area now, before its swallowed up by chain stores and neglect.

Can we stop calling these places "sex shops"? Boots sell battery operated sex toys, they don't call it the "sex department", they call it the "sexual wellbeing department". Most department stores sell sexy underwear, they don't call it the "sex department", they call it the "lingerie department". Why don't we just call them "adult shops"? They are after all the only shops where children aren't allowed.

At last, a shop in Poole for adult pleasure! I can't wait to go in and have a look. As for the complaints, if you don't like it, don't go in. The pictures in the window are pictures you see in any underwear store or catalogue. In fact they are much tamer then a lot of the pop videos that children watch these days, so i really don't see the problem with the shop being near a shop selling school uniforms. Young kids will only know it's something 'dirty' by the way their parents behave towards the shop. Walk down Poole high street on any given day and you can hear certain parents swearing and shouting at their childen. Surely the behaviour of some people is more of a problem than that of a shop children can't even enter. Be thankful someone has invested their time and money into the town by opening a closed down store.

You may as well try to ban M&S etc. for selling suspenders, stockings and thongs etc. These are all sexy underwear that can been seen by children with ease. I doubt somehow any child would get through the door of a sex shop before being turned away by the staff.

No the death knell are the ridiculous parking restrictions and the extortionate parking charges that you, as councillor, voted through!

Mr Budimir would have paid a fortune for this amount of advertising, I can picture the smile on his face now.
Whilst everybody is entitled to their own opinions, I must say some of the comments on here could have been taken straight from some Victorian paper.
It's interesting how often opposition to the pornification of our sexuality and society is characterised as 'Victorian'.
Victorian England was a place where sexual exploitation and abuse of women and girls was rife, and fuelled by p.........y (the p word is censored by the Echo). Many Victorians turned a blind eye to what was going on, and the damage it caused. A few brave souls, like Josephine Butler and William Stead, brought it out into the open and campaigned against it, and were ridiculed and vilified for breaking the convention that, as Josephine Butler put it : "Silence was thought to be the great duty of all on such subjects" (An Autobiographical Memoir, 1893).
Is history repeating itself, 120 years after Josephine Butler wrote those words? We may be more 'open' about p.........y (even if the Echo doesn't allow us to use the word), but some of us seem to be just as dismissive of the damage it causes.

I don't understand the link between an adult shop and p*******y. If that was all this shop was selling it would soon go out of business as so much is freely available elsewhere. Whilst I agree with mooninpisces, that in victorian times, it was all swept under the carpet and not spoken about, this shop is out in the open. The damage caused in victorian times was due to the fact that it something not discussed in "polite society".

All this whipped up hysteria over a nothing story. If you don't like the shop don't go in it. If you do, then visit it. Simple.
As for all the 'save our children' nonsense, it is quite wrong that parents encourage 12 year olds to dress so they look like an 18 year old and then complain when an adult store opens up or their little darling gets chatted up by an 18 year old lad complaining that she is only a 'child'.
Adults are adults and children should be children. Unfortunately so many parents want their children to be adults by the time they are 12 but are the first to shout from the rooftops when their kids are subjected to adult shops or are chatted up.

The research evidence is clear:
-shops such as these pressurise women and girls to behave in ways that damages their self-esteem
-they massively reinforce gender inequality
- they encourage men to sexually objectify women and girls.
Is this really what we want anywhere on Poole High Street, let alone opposite a schoolwear shop?
www.object.uk
I don't know which is more shocking, the opening of this shop, or the complacency of most of the commenters above in the face of the pornification of society and the damage it is inflicting on all of us, women, men and children.
Would you care to point out where in these reports you've quoted there is a reference to sex shops?
Shame the Bournemouth Echo has in the last year followed the Dorset and Southampton Echo down the "Isn't anything to do with sex is shocking" route. Ironic when the only stable sector of classified advertising in the paper is the adult chat phone lines. Still at least some of the comments on here have been hilarious. Down with this sort of thing indeed!

I see a business expansion plan and competitive edge for the school uniform shop -
whilst the children are getting their uniforms sorted sell nurse, French-maid and similar outfits/uniforms to the parents.
They might even be able to source some geography teacher outfits for the more discerning customer - love those tweed / corded jackets and leather elbow patches......

The Echo is not known for quality stories. Their parent company is making losses in the UK hence why you see so much annoying adverts on the website now. So they are under pressure to fill the pages. Also, if you are a great journalist, your aspirations are going to be higher than the Daily Echo so any talent they do have will move on.
But at least it is not depressing news - just silly! :-)

Another example of complete judgmental extreme thoughts. Do these people still exist in society?
This person "Guiselle" admits to having 4 children I am sure? I mean did that all happen in the dark or did they come out of a jar?
People who criticise like this are usually the ones with the most "flamboyant" romantic lives. This person is probably making these films look like Thomas the Tank Engine compared to what they get up to (and that is a complement) ;-)

What a load of fuss about nothing!!
Setchfields have been selling novelty adult items for years. Nobody has complained to the Echo about that.
The only thing I have against Purrfectly Discreet is the window posters of the scantily clad ladies. As this does look tacky and gives the wrong impression.
If I was the owner I would have a look around at other local establishments like this and not just the ones based in Soho.

Since when was a gaming shop considered sleazy? That anonymous coward's comments cease to carry any meaning beyond that point.

Bore off Echo. Good to see a shop opening not closing!

find excitement but its all in the mind!
Money is the root of all evil and lets be
honest we all love it!The point is a lot
of lonely people out there are looking
for love and the simple things in life
are the best. Family, friends and good
health. Hobbies such as art and reading
a good book. Try cycling that's fun!

So you're equating singing in a choir to sexual gratification? Which choir is this??

It is a good job we don't have an art gallery on the high street featuring the works of Boris Vallejo, Giger, Frank Frazetta, Julie Bell and other artists.
Imagine the Fuss that would create, the shock... The Horror... All that flesh!!!.........

Sorry pressed submit too quick
The only sleazy gaming shops I can think of are the tacky casino / amusement places.

Honestly, some people need to grow up and stop being so prim and proper....
The shop from the outside looks like any Ann Summers store you see in any town, its not offensive at all and ive seen more nudity in pop videos, and children are bombarded with that now!
Shock horror a sex shop....that neither looks seedy or offensive from the outside...but i bet all the do gooders (secretly) would love to go in and look around, and maybe god forbid make a purchase!! :-)

And well done to John the shop owner...i wanted to open a shop like this a few years ago, but thought that Poole Borough Council would never give the go ahead...i wish him all the best in his new venture, its difficult out there to be a shopkeeper in the current climate.

I would have thought he'd do well in this current climate, nothing cheers you up more than good sex with the one you love, and I say that because I bet the majority of his customers will be happily married loving couples who know how to keep some spice in their relationship and not the dirty mac brigade like people think.

"We all know that explicit R18 rated DVD's....are about objectified and often violence..." !!!
Obviously you must have first hand knowledge and have personally watched vast quantities of these said films in order to be able to quote this as fact ??
You need to chill out and calm down and who is "We" would that be the royal we! Dont speak for everyone my friend. You sound like you are uptight and frustrated perhaps a trip to the new adult shop would help you relax !

Cant see the problem, its not some seedy sex shop, looks like an Anne Summers type thing, many of which grace our towns main high streets across the country.

You may as well try to ban M&S etc. for selling suspenders, stockings and thongs etc. These are all sexy underwear that can been seen by children with ease. I doubt somehow any child would get through the door of a sex shop before being turned away by the staff.
Not forgetting that Boots sells condoms, vibrating rings and 'sexual massagers'.
Don't remember the puritans on here making a fuss about Boots. Maybe too much sex makes you forgetful?
PS, where did I put my keys?

Perhaps they should stop newsagents selling newspapers because there's boobs on page 3? As long as there's not any cause for my 3year old looking in the window & saying "mummy, what's that pink sausagey thing for?" I really don't mind.
People can be a rude out and about so a couple of ladies in undies on posters in a window are the least of my worries.
I think a better position (nudge nudge) may have been found but it's nice to see a shop opening rather than closing. Good publicity tho!
