A globe featuring the Falklands Islands marked with their Argentinian name has sparked outrage after going on sale at John Lewis in Poole.

The British-ruled South Atlantic islands are incorrectly marked as Las Malvinas on the 8-inch diameter globe, which costs £95.

There is no reference to their English name nor the fact that they are a UK overseas territory.

Red-faced bosses at the department store are now facing calls from angry Falklands War veterans to apologise and withdraw the globe from their shelves.

One Falklands hero called for a boycott on the chain, describing the blunder as an "own goal for the Brits".

The shocking mistake has been blamed on a design error by the globe's Indian suppliers.

The 'Curiosity' globe, that is mounted on a silver stand, is described on John Lewis' website as 'a brilliant way to add a traditional touch of knowledge to the room'.

Larger versions of the globes sold by the chain have the Falklands Islands correctly labelled.

The Falklands Islands, under British rule since 1833, were invaded by Argentine troops in 1982 after a longstanding dispute over sovereignty of the archipelago boiled over.

More than 250 British soldiers lost their lives liberating the islands in the 74-day conflict.

Earlier this year, islands overwhelmingly voted for the Falklands to remain a UK overseas territory in a referendum.

Tony Chambers, from Sherborne, Dorset, served as helicopter engineer with 848 Naval Air Squadron in the Falklands War.

Mr Chambers, 49, said: "I'm shocked that a British company such as John Lewis would do something like this.

"It is very disrespectful and there will be lots of people upset by this.

"It is a real insult. There is no such thing as the Malvinas - the correct name is the Falklands.

"Argentina will see this as points scored for them and an own goal by the Brits.

"I will be boycotting John Lewis until they issue an unreserved apology and remove the offending globe from their shelves."

The globe is on sale at the John Lewis store in Poole among other UK outlets.

One John Lewis customer, who asked not to be named, said: "I'm disgusted and appalled that John Lewis would sell this globe.

"It is a huge insult to the servicemen who gave everything for their country to keep the Falklands British."

John Lewis said an initial sample supplied by the manufacturers had the islands marked correctly but a second batch were incorrect.

A spokesman said: "As soon as we became aware of this, we contacted the supplier to ensure that all replenished stock featured the original approved design."
