LINWOOD School is top of the class after Ofsted inspectors ranked it outstanding in every category.

The Bournemouth special school was described as “a centre of excellence” and praise was heaped upon staff, senior leaders and governors.

The Alma Road school provides special education for 207 pupils between the ages of three and 19.

This is the fourth consecutive rating of outstanding from inspectors.

Pupils have a wide range of needs ranging from autistic spectrum conditions, moderate, severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Many students also have additional behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

Inspectors said: “Pupils’ achievement is outstanding because all pupils, whatever their learning difficulty or disability, are given work that stretches them. The very strong team of senior leaders and governors continually challenges the school to get even better.”

They said “trusting and respectful” relationships exist between staff and students and praised the “exemplary” checking and recording of pupils’ progress.

Inspectors visited for two days in March and observed 21 lessons, met staff and pupils and sought the views of parents and carers.

Chair of governors Julie Clark said: “I am absolutely delighted with this report which so magnificently captures the qualities and aspirations of Linwood School.

“The Linwood approach is one of teamwork and the whole team of teachers, teaching assistants, administration and support staff can really be proud of their contribution to this exceptional report.”

Headteacher Steve Brown added: “This report will serve to motivate an already superb team to continue to strive to give our pupils the very best deal in terms of learning, care and preparation for adult life.”
