TWO teenagers braved hours sat in a paddling pool full of baked beans in the centre of Bournemouth on Sunday to raise funds for the trip of a lifetime later this year.

Lucy Hurst and Hannah Wilcox, both 16, are students at Oak Academy – formerly known as Oakmead College of Technology – in West Howe and will be heading to Kampala in Uganda in October as part of two teams from the school aged 14-19.

Lucy’s brother William, 13, who goes to Oak Academy as well, will be heading to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia as part of the same project.

They will be working and teaching street children living in extreme poverty in both countries.

In order to raise cash to help fund the trip, they sacrificed their dignity for the day as shoppers and visitors were urged to pour tins of cold baked beans over them as they sat in the pool in Bournemouth Square.

The two girls braved the stunt while William got off lightly – being left in charge of drumming up support.

Lucy said: “We’re trying to get some money for it today. It’s disgusting – I don’t even like eating baked beans.”

Hannah added: “We need to raise £1,350 – it’s really cold!”

One of the teams will spend 10 days in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

The school has worked with organisers the Cred Foundation for many years, sending students to Addis Ababa, but this is the first time that youngsters will be going to Uganda.

Students will provide a week of fun and games for children in the two countries, as well as taking essential medical and educational supplies with them.
