THE principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra would like to see a concert hall at the new look Waterfront site.

Kirill Karabits says it would be a ‘brilliant’ addition to the town’s facilities, following the demolition of the Imax.

As a big celebration to mark the demise of the cinema complex, the BSO is performing two sell-out concerts at the seafront on June 29. Mr Karabits will be conducting both.

In an interview with the Daily Echo, he said: “One of my strategic goals was always to play more concerts in Bournemouth because there is nothing stronger than the bond between the orchestra and the city that bears its name.

“There is a great acoustic shell in the Pavilion and I really believe in the idea of a concert hall on the Waterfront site in Bournemouth.

“It would be brilliant.

He added: “We need to involve ourselves more in the life of Bournemouth and establish stronger links with the community.”

The conductor said he is very excited by the two Waterfront concerts.

“I agreed to do them immediately even though it wasn’t on the agenda.

“This will be a tremendous occasion. Everyone is really looking forward to it.”

Karabits has appealed to the public, through the Echo, to let him know what they would like to see and hear.

He wants to put on lunchtime or ‘rush hour’ concerts to attract new, younger and different audiences.

The conductor will be writing a regular column for the Daily Echo which will appear in our new Later supplement.
