When Oakmeadians club moved to Meyrick Park it only had two senior teams - now there are 19 different teams playing rugby at the club.

On the May 11, this year, the club will celebrate its 50th anniversary.  It will be a very special day for all of the staff and a big event day for the teams.

The club was started by a group of young men from Oakmeadians School and for a long time the club didn’t have a home, until 1988.

The club is one of the top ten in the country at introducing people to rugby – on all levels. However, according to chairman Mike Garrett, this place is not just about rugby as a sport, it is about community spirit. Quiz nights, pudding club – all this is happening here.

“We have three senior men teams, and a ladies team which play at a very high standard, youth teams – from Under 15’s to Under 18’s – boys and girls.

"We now have a brand new team of pre-school children, called Little Bears, who don’t play rugby just yet, but they do some musical games on the pavement, play and drink juice at the club’s bar.”

Everybody that is involved in the Oakmeadians Rugby Club is a volunteer – from coaches right through to the whole management team, and a fantastic group of ladies in the kitchen. Volunteers are welcome to join the club, bring new ideas and work in order to make the club even better.

The club’s president, Andy Walton, believes that there are no limits for improvements. He said: “We do most things right and the growth of the club lets us highlight the areas which still need to be improved.

"Everyone has a different idea of what better is, so if people want to come and change something or do better, please come on board.”
