HELP out a local charity and get the chance to explore behind the wall at the Drax estate.

Melcombe Regis Rotary Club will be holding a charity day at Highwood Garden at Charborough Park on Monday, May 6.

The bank holiday fun will run from 2.30pm to 6pm with craft stalls, cream teas and walks through the gardens.

The event is being held by the Rotary Club to raise money for the Cornish-based charity ShelterBox.

A box contains everything a displaced family could need in a disaster hit area, and contains a tent big enough for an extended family, waterproof sleeping mats, thermal blankets, a cooker which will burn anything from scrap cardboard to dried camel dung, a basic tool kit, an activity pack for children and many other things to make life easier for a family who have lost everything.

Ian Brooke, from the Rotary group, called it ‘probably the most cost effective single purpose charity in the world.’ He said: “The boxes bring shelter, warmth and dignity direct to those who have lost everything in a natural or manmade disaster.”

He added: “Most of us have travelled along the A31 and wondered just what is behind that long, high wall guarded by the ‘five legged stag’.

“Well, this is your chance to find out. After driving nearly a mile through parkland you will come to the Highwood woodland garden which in May should be absolutely full of azaleas, rhododendrons and wild flowers.

“When you have finished your walk, you will be able to enjoy one of our cream teas then browse among our country craft stalls.”

Admission is £4 for adults and £2 for under 16s, anyone under six goes free.

Mr Brooke said that if 300 families joined them for the day then they would be able to send two Shelterboxes to families who have lost everything.
