VIDEO: Get a good a look at this view of the Imax - it's the last time you'll see it

Get a good a look at this view of the Imax - it's the last time you'll see it Get a good a look at this view of the Imax - it's the last time you'll see it

A SIGNIFICANT section of the Imax building is being demolished this morning, opening up more of the sea view for the first time in almost 15 years.

A 220-tonne crane moved on to the site on Bournemouth seafront on Monday in readiness to start pulling down the side of the building closest to the road – including the last ‘waves’ on top of the structure.

This morning it has been extended 68 metres high to hang a protective mat on the Bath Road side of the Waterfront building so demolition of the waves can begin.

Sarah May, project manager, said: “Work is progressing well. A larger 220-tonne crane has now arrived on site and over the next few days this will be used to position the protective matting on the flyover-side of the building so the deconstruction can continue along this elevation.”

See how the demolition has progressed in our gallery

Interserve, which is carrying out the work for the council, has been tearing deep into the doomed building on the seafront, with most of the beach side now gone and the middle section resembling a hollow shell.

Last week site manager Barry Lacey said the work was progressing on schedule without any hitches.

The demolition is due to be completed by the end of March and in April work will start on the new public performance space planned by Bournemouth council.

Until June workers will install lighting, carry out hard landscaping and put in handrails and balustrades.

What a total waste of good money. Old people and handicapped children are going without and all the echo, the council, and a bunch of sad people are worried about is the view from the road for 200 metres.

err, you don't still think it is about a view, do you ?

The council are spending £10m clearing the site and have openly stated that it is preperation for a 'comprehensive redevelopment;

You don't think they are doing that out of the goodness of their heart or a wish for a view do you ? Or that it has been rushed through to sit their empty for years upon years ?

Still, the gullible will flap their hands in excitement like seals after a couple of bucket loads of red bull - and the usual suspects , fellow travellers and paid employers will turn up here under various other names trying to defend this next scam, mostly by attacking those who know what is really going on. Full of council bull in their case.

Bob the thing is you credit the council with an ability to plan and foresee the future far beyond reality IMHO. What I see in the council is often incompetence, a lack of foresight at times and as in the case of the reef a complete inability to properly manage a project.
-
What I don't see is evil intentions most councillors want to do the best for the town, whether they have the ability to make that happen is more open to question. I wonder if you believe the US faked the moon landings because your belief in conspiracy theories makes me wonder if you do.
-
Yes the council want to redevelop the site but there ability to do that is still open to question and I believe any development would have to be sympathetic to the view. I think that will mean we have the view for a minimum of 10 years and probably a lot longer, we will of course see but since I have put a time scale down would you like to do the same and tell us by what date the view will disappear.

must be a desperate sign when a council proudly claims credit for "un-building " something! Maybe the history books will read "in 2013 the council successfully unbuilt an IMAX cinema, this was just the first in a line of glittering demolitions...."

Why didn't this particular I-Max actually work out? According to the interweb, as of September 2012, there are 697 IMAX theatres in 52 countries.

So what went wrong with the Bournemouth one - so drastically wrong it has to be demolished?

jobsworthwatch says...

The most annoying aspect of this building, and the surf reef, is that they are explicit demonstrations of gross incompetence by our elected representatives from which they can just walk away, leaving us the council tax payers to pick up the tab!

It wasn't exactly the most attractive building, it looked more like a warehouse, I believe it was in the wrong location and hard to get to and I believe that as always the councils own extortionate parking charges had a part to play just as these charges are killing the town centre.
Lets face it, anything the council has it's grubby hands in never works.

I'm glad you are not in charge of the beach! Allow cars!! They are already allowed in some places, which is too much as far as I'm concerned. The beach huts are great, if in need of updating. We could do with more restaurants and cafes on the beach though.

err, the moon landings were faked and have little to do with this debate, other than to highlight the paucity of your argument.

What IS real is the way the Boscombe seafront was managed. The flats were built and the council was able to do that by convincing the gullible that they would deliver on the rest of the deal - the bit you like to call "the best for the town"

Likewise Kings Park where the planning permission was given yet the council again failed to deliver "the best for the town".

As to "any development would have to be sympathetic to the view" perhaps you might care to look at the Moneychine development where we were told all manner of guff about sympoathy and views - all of which went out of the window once the building work began.

And you naively think the rest of us are going to believe it won't happen again. It happened with the original Imax building and all we got (as with Boscombe) was a bit of hand wringing and tutting from the council ... just as we will get here.

So in spite of your suggestions of conspiracies and moon landings this is about reality. It is about what is going on now and what will go on in the near futire. And if you cannot wait then I suggest you have a look through the archives and see where I was saying that the council intented building on the Bath road car park and the Imax site, long before the council had even mentioned any idea of even buying the site.

What I find was the most distasteful in removal of the IMAX building was the complete destruction of the materials used in it's construction instead of recycling and reusing as much as possible before final demolition. Since I no longer live near Bournemouth, I have had to rely on the videos provided by the "Echo". In those videos, I saw glass being shattered, sheet material being ripped up, long steel columns and steel cross beams being bent and torched for disposal, instead of being
preserved for resale. The IMAX was a lightly constructed building for all of it's size, with possibly up to 50% of the material used in it's construction being reusable. And the process of de-construction instead of demolition could have provided employment to a number of businesses in the recycled materials field as well.

There are not enough tourists and bedsit dwellers living nearby to support an IMAX.

My point was that Glashen's attempt to deflect from what is really going on was to introduce some unconnected stuff about the moon landings as with Arjays twaddle about the theory of evolution.

So for the record, and for those who would rather the debate did not focus on the subject in hand, I have no reason to believe the moon landings were faked, in any shape or form etc

As to believing in Bournemouth council keeping to their word I would suggest local taxpayers check back on what happened when the Imax building did not stick to the agreed plans, what happened when the Moneycombe Chine flats went above the agreed height (the skyline), what has happened to the Ice Rink.

Of course certain folk will try to defend the council, that's their job. So whilst they are at it perhaps they could also explain to the rest of us where are the 90 new jobs at Boscombe seafront, the new piazza in front of the pier, the upmarket shops and cafe on the pier, the entertainment on the pier, the £2m plus missing sales of the now beach pods, the 10,000 surf visits....

And why all that failed and yet tens and tens of thousands more have had to be spent replenishing (only) that bit of beach opposite the reef.

Incompetence or simply that was never the intention ? When you work that out, the rest concerning the Imax and Bath Hill road carpark site falls into place
