A PETITION to save Witney’s town centre Post Office has generated more than 1,300 signatures.

The Post Office announced in February that the Market Square branch could be closed and services moved to another shop in the town.

Campaigners hope the petition will convince the company not to close the facility.

Meanwhile, Post Office representatives have met with West Oxfordshire District Council and pledged to maintain the level of service in Witney.

Witney councillor Duncan Enright, who launched the petition, said it had now gathered 660 signatures in person and a further 719 online.

He said: “When I heard about the plans to close down the Post Office in Witney I thought it was such a ludicrous idea, given it is always so busy. Every extra signature puts a bit of extra pressure on the Post Office.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “No decisions have been made and once a potential partner has been found there will be a six week public consultation to allow the local community to give us their views on the move.”
