STUDENTS have been given an insight into the internal workings of the car business thanks to a successful initiative designed to get young people into work.

Vauxhall and Chevrolet dealer Sherwoods invited a group of students from Haughton Academy, Darlington, to get a taste of life in a modern workshop.

Year 9 pupils gained hands on experience of engine diagnostics and the role of an automotive technician under the watchful eye of Sherwoods staff as part of Darlington Partnership’s Foundation for Jobs initiative.

They helped technicians change radiator and air-conditioning units, checked fluids and helped prepare for a customer a brand new Adam, the latest model to be released this month by Vauxhall.

Assistant head teacher Paul Bartle said: “The aim is to give the students an understanding of what life is like in a modern workshop at a time when they are looking at their options and might be considering engineering and design technology.

“The Foundation for Jobs programme has been fantastic at creating opportunities like these which before it was launched were difficult to come by.”

Managing director of Sherwoods and chairman of Darlington Partnership Alasdair MacConachie added: “Opportunities like these can be instrumental in shaping young people’s futures offering the inspiration and aspirations they need to steer them into a great career.

“More employers should get involved with young people by providing internships, apprenticeships and work experience. They offer companies the dynamism of youth and an alternative perspective which can add value to the business.”

Foundation for Jobs has already helped thousands of people by offering them the chance to secure work experience, apprenticeships and jobs.
