New dance-off style app in the works after Pavilion Dance awarded funding

PAVILION dance South West is the only dance organisation to receive a Digital R&D award that will fund an exciting new project.

The Digital R&D fund for the arts was launched in 2011 by Arts Council England in partnership with the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts along with the Humanities Research council to support research and development projects that use digital technology to enhance audience reach and explore new business models in the arts.

Pavilion Dance South West will be working with Bristol-based game developer Mobile Pie, who recently developed a game of Channel 4’s BAFTA award winning drama Misfits, and Dr Seth Giddings from the Digital Cultures research Centre at the University of West of England, to develop a dance gaming app.

The idea behind the app is that using a smartphone, users will be able to film themselves dancing in a specific location which they can tag. The films can be uploaded to a place where they can share them.

The challenge remains for other users to perform a better dance and retag the location.

There are hopes that this will spark deeper engagement from the dance community, also allowing them to gather information about the local dance providers, dancers, companies, venues as well as access to information about events that are happening nearby such as classes and performances.
