A teenager has been arrested by police investigating allegations that a woman was raped at a Hampshire beauty spot.

The 15-year-old from New Milton was questioned about an incident alleged to have taken place at a nature reserve in the town on Tuesday night.

He was detained the following day before being released on bail until April 29 pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said the youth and the victim met near New Milton railway station between 10pm and 11.30pm on Tuesday before walking to Ballard Lake.

She added: “Police are keen to stress that no-one else is being sought in connection with the incident."

The woman, believed to be in her early twenties, was not taken to hospital.

Police were at the lake at 8am yesterday and sealed off a large area close to a hut used by New Milton Girl Guides.

Forensic officers spent several hours examining the scene and the cordon remained in place until 11.30am.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Paul Longhurst at Southampton CID on 101.
