Residents call for rethink on-street parking but council says U-turn won't happen

HOPEFUL: Residents who oppose the plan for parking to be removed from North Road in Poole
RESIDENTS have not given up hope that a compromise will be found in their wrangle with Poole council over parking in their road.
North Road inhabitants presented a petition of 136 signatures to Borough of Poole calling for on-street parking to remain and complaining about the way the decision was taken.
The petition has gone to the efficiency and effectiveness overview and scrutiny committee for future consideration, however the portfolio holder is adamant that the decision to remove 63 parking spaces from the road was properly made.
Tracy Pallatt of Sea View Residents Association said they were hopeful the whole decision would be reconsidered, criticising the way it was “rushed through” and approved on a casting vote.
“What they are doing isn’t good enough,” she said. “They have got the money and they are determined to spend it.”
She said residents would be left with nowhere to park and removing cars from the street would lead to traffic speeding along North Road, particularly on the hill.
She called for parking to be left on one side and for a 20mph speed limit.
Cllr Xena Dion, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, who confirmed the recommendation from the transportation advisory group for measures which will help bus operators, said the petition would not change the decision.
Forty-five parking spaces are to be removed from the top of the road, where there have been no objections, and 18 from the bottom, reduced by three from the original proposal.
“We can’t have a big strategy and then U-turn. We have listened to people and accepted different details or adapted to suit people where we can,” she said.
“In the area south of Danecourt Road we have not made any changes.”
She added: “There wasn’t anything that wasn’t right in terms of consultation or process. We are not going to be able to please everybody.”

Oh and the bus argument is a veil to hide the real reason, as will be shown when the bus services are reduced due to cuts and the council not being able to subsidise the services.

The arrogance of this Portfolio Holder seems to know no bounds. I believe that in the real world she is a Health worker-doesn´t exactly equip her as an expert on traffic.

“We can’t have a big strategy and then U-turn.” You mean like a strategy of traffic lights on the Fleetsbridge roundabout, when you did not want to be seen to be wrong, so you produced a lie (cover up) to try to show a £300,000 saving? And since then, you have been covering up that cover up? 20MPH limits? Are you aware that in the last few years of ridiculous speed limit reductions and large numbers of Dorset drivers going on speed awareness courses, casualty rates which were reducing steeply are now increasing?

Didn't realise that the Upton 'protection from the nanny state' organisation was alive and well and successfully helping people to get from A to B easily. I salute them !

There are of course many other traffic issues where you have failed to listen and have tried to bamboozle the public with incorrect information such as KSI figures at Fleetsbridge roundabout, why do you endorse such behaviour from your council officers?
well a few facts might go down well here. firstly, most residents have their own off-road parking here. secondly many residents south of danecourt road do not have offroad parking so we have not made any changes and have left on-street parking for them. thirdly, there is a great move in the uk towards sustainable transport if we do not make better provision for cyclists, pedestrians and bus users then we will all be sitting in traffic in the future and not going anywhere so i do not see how this is a case of not listening!!

xena dion wrote:Councillor Dion, can you confirm that the Borough of Poole is currently in negotiation to introduce parking charges for its staff to use the Civic Centre car park ? Can you then visualise those staff wishing not to pay to park at the Civic Centre car park looking to park elsewhere locally, i.e. North Road ? Can you then understand how the two things happening at the same time are an absolutely amazing coincidence ? A reply would be nice. A lack of reply would speak volumes.

Maybe if your parking charges were not so unreasonable people would visit Poole Town centre more often and there would be less empty shops. It is cheaper to park in Bournemouth town centre car parks than Poole.
