Residents call for rethink on-street parking but council says U-turn won't happen

HOPEFUL: Residents who oppose the plan for parking to be removed from North Road in Poole HOPEFUL: Residents who oppose the plan for parking to be removed from North Road in Poole

RESIDENTS have not given up hope that a compromise will be found in their wrangle with Poole council over parking in their road.

North Road inhabitants presented a petition of 136 signatures to Borough of Poole calling for on-street parking to remain and complaining about the way the decision was taken.

The petition has gone to the efficiency and effectiveness overview and scrutiny committee for future consideration, however the portfolio holder is adamant that the decision to remove 63 parking spaces from the road was properly made.

Tracy Pallatt of Sea View Residents Association said they were hopeful the whole decision would be reconsidered, criticising the way it was “rushed through” and approved on a casting vote.

“What they are doing isn’t good enough,” she said. “They have got the money and they are determined to spend it.”

She said residents would be left with nowhere to park and removing cars from the street would lead to traffic speeding along North Road, particularly on the hill.

She called for parking to be left on one side and for a 20mph speed limit.

Cllr Xena Dion, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, who confirmed the recommendation from the transportation advisory group for measures which will help bus operators, said the petition would not change the decision.

Forty-five parking spaces are to be removed from the top of the road, where there have been no objections, and 18 from the bottom, reduced by three from the original proposal.

“We can’t have a big strategy and then U-turn. We have listened to people and accepted different details or adapted to suit people where we can,” she said.

“In the area south of Danecourt Road we have not made any changes.”

She added: “There wasn’t anything that wasn’t right in terms of consultation or process. We are not going to be able to please everybody.”

Not over those of a private bus company at any rate.

This is local democracy as it happens nowadays, almost every resident has signed the petition against these proposals but as the lady says it wont change the decision! Utterly unbelievable but nevertheless a true reflection of how these portfolio holders on Poole council view themselves and their decisions.

The arrogance of this Portfolio Holder seems to know no bounds. I believe that in the real world she is a Health worker-doesn´t exactly equip her as an expert on traffic.

If the council wish to prevent residents from parking outside their houses then it's up to the council to build each resident a garage for their cars.

It's ironic this is the bus company forcing this need for more space as it will be more environmentally friendly yet you get to Ashley road where it's traffic them crawls all the way to Bmth. Where us the figures on the perceived savings? Just how many times / for how long have buses had to stop to wait for over a week / month?

Ahh me thinks the real reason is to prevent council employees from parking in North Road instead of paying the charge being brought in for staff to pay in the civic multi storey car park. Frankly the Borough of Poole is simply anti-car drivers and will do anything to cause them misery, especially to residents who have limited parking anyway. Their idea is "oh look, we can stop someone from having a vehicle by taking away parking".
Oh and the bus argument is a veil to hide the real reason, as will be shown when the bus services are reduced due to cuts and the council not being able to subsidise the services.

well a few facts might go down well here. firstly, most residents have their own off-road parking here. secondly many residents south of danecourt road do not have offroad parking so we have not made any changes and have left on-street parking for them. thirdly, there is a great move in the uk towards sustainable transport if we do not make better provision for cyclists, pedestrians and bus users then we will all be sitting in traffic in the future and not going anywhere so i do not see how this is a case of not listening!!

Oh it is so easy to make a decision but to make one that will withstand the test of time so that it can be sustained beyond the next election - that is something else !

“We can’t have a big strategy and then U-turn.” You mean like a strategy of traffic lights on the Fleetsbridge roundabout, when you did not want to be seen to be wrong, so you produced a lie (cover up) to try to show a £300,000 saving? And since then, you have been covering up that cover up? 20MPH limits? Are you aware that in the last few years of ridiculous speed limit reductions and large numbers of Dorset drivers going on speed awareness courses, casualty rates which were reducing steeply are now increasing?

When talking about the Fleets Bridge lighting saga, it seems strange to me that nobody mentions the 'granny knot' at Upton where motorists make it work without lights.

SHHHHH!! Don't mention this, keep it quiet, or we'll end up with another Canford Bottom type arrangement, with about 100 traffic lights, I'll never be able to get in or out of Upton again.

Ooops ! So sorry ! Just thought the driving skills of the motorists in Upton must be very special and we could learn from them. Didn't realise that the Upton 'protection from the nanny state' organisation was alive and well and successfully helping people to get from A to B easily. I salute them !

Madam, if you listen then why does your authority continue to allow the congestion at the Springfield/North Rd junction caused by the same 3/4 vehicles and vans parking partially on the pavement/road thus not allowing buses to pass. There are of course many other traffic issues where you have failed to listen and have tried to bamboozle the public with incorrect information such as KSI figures at Fleetsbridge roundabout, why do you endorse such behaviour from your council officers?

Patience ! Things are changing. After the gyratory saga some have learnt that they should not only listen but try to understand and then do something about making something 'sustainable' actually happen. We should realise that 'others' take time to catch up with the 'some' !!

Councillor Dion, can you confirm that the Borough of Poole is currently in negotiation to introduce parking charges for its staff to use the Civic Centre car park ? Can you then visualise those staff wishing not to pay to park at the Civic Centre car park looking to park elsewhere locally, i.e. North Road ? Can you then understand how the two things happening at the same time are an absolutely amazing coincidence ? A reply would be nice. A lack of reply would speak volumes.

The fact is that without people moving about in their cars the economy is not going to go anywhere.
Maybe if your parking charges were not so unreasonable people would visit Poole Town centre more often and there would be less empty shops. It is cheaper to park in Bournemouth town centre car parks than Poole.
