Starbucks is open - but not everyone's happy
A SMALL band of protesters gathered outside the newly opened Starbucks at Bournemouth’s Triangle to object to the chain’s tax arrangements.
Activist group Anonymous referred to the tax avoidance controversy that came to light last year when it was revealed Starbucks had paid only £8.6million in corporation tax in 14 years of trading despite sales of over £400m in 2011.
In December last year, Starbucks said it would voluntarily pay extra tax in the next two years.
One protester said: “We just want them to pay their tax like everyone else.
A Starbucks spokesman said: “We have listened to our customers and are making a number of changes to ensure we pay corporation tax in the UK. We have made a commitment to pay tax in the UK over and above what we are required to, so that the UK Exchequer will be £10m better off in each of the next two years.”

Who says they want a bigger state or are even left-wing? Maybe they just think large corporations should pay their fair share of tax. I happen to agree with them, unlike the braying donkeys commenting before me.

Whether you agree with them or not, the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental part of democracy.

As for the protesters, what do they think they will achieve waving placards and wearing their silly "V for Vendetta" masks? Apart from looking like a sad bunch of muppets of course! I bet some of these guys were involved with that "Occupy Boscombe" group who were illegally squatting in the BCCA and Bournemouth University last year. You losers need to get off benefits, get a life and a job and stop being a nuisance to society.

nditioned to stand up for corrupt systems despite the damage within society. 'Starmuck's' has pledged to pay a token sum to HMRC at the same time stripping the workers rights and wages, which conveniently was left out of the mainstream media. The corporation is once again the sad fact that our high streets are being monopolised by the corrupt and homogenised stores at the expense of fair paying individualised independents ....community spirit be damned!
Freedom of speech should be nurtured in this land, because the Government are doing their best to strip us of that right.... well done for people who care enough to take to the streets.

Yes Starbucks should be paying more tax, but all they have done is what many other companies are doing to avoid it. It's a legal loophole and until the Government close it they have done nothing illegal.

Stop waving your plackards and go get a job.
You confess that you do not understand what the masks are about and make an assumption.
Then you suggest the protesters stop protesting and get a job.
So even though you don't understand them you feel you have the right to tell these people what to do? it sounds like you should be a politician or a president/prime minister.
The masks represent an idea and the basic gesture is that we the people have had enough of corporate greed and enough of many other things I won't get into in here because I'll probably wasting my time.
And get a job? I already have one thanks, it seems to me this whole "get a job" thing is a way for the people with a job to justify their apathy.

There are dozens of people in Bournemouth who work cash in hand and don't declare their earnings to the tax man. I don't see people protesting against these people.
.
I am not apathetic, but if you want Starbucks, Amazon and the like to pay up their taxes you should be writing to your MP to ask for a change in the law to make the tax rules tighther. You say people have had enough of corporate greed but how many of these people have equity based investments, savings or pensions which are dependent on big company shares performing well if they are to grow.

Pay tax like everyone else? And how much tax is collected from people standing about on a weekday? I'll hazard it approximates to three eighths of naff all.

Your response is typical of what I expected from someone who doesn't like the truth aimed at them. We all know that the vast majority of people in these "Occupy" protest groups are unemployed (and mostly unemployable) drop outs on benefits and nothing but a nuisance to society. Take your own advice and do something.... like get a job and start paying some taxes yourself!

? No.
Unethical or Immoral Maybe? ......Yes.
It's a shame the latter is not more important to some of you than the former, if it was then more of you might understand the protestors point a bit better.
Please note I also acknowledge there is plenty of unethical and immoral behaviour going on outside of what Starbucks are doing, some of it much worse, but we've got to start somewhere haven't we.......

Two torts that involve the communication of false information about a person, a group, or an entity such as a corporation. Libel is any Defamation that can be seen, such as a writing, printing, effigy, movie, or statue. Slander is any defamation that is spoken and heard.
Collectively known as defamation, libel and slander are civil wrongs that harm a reputation; decrease respect, regard, or confidence; or induce disparaging, hostile, or disagreeable opinions or feelings against an individual or entity. The injury to one's good name or reputation is affected through written or spoken words or visual images. The laws governing these torts are identical.

Oh and by the way, my earlier comment appeared in today's "What you're saying on line" section in the Echo. Nothing you said made it in I'm afraid so I guess the majority agree with my view. Or maybe it's just another conspiracy from the evil Government owned media corporations to silence your crusade for "twoof and justiss!"

Conspiracy theorists all have one thing in common: they're all long on waffle and short on facts. Look at all the conspiracies that are still rumbling on: JFK, the "fake" Moon landings, Monroe, Lady Di, 9/11. Whenever there's a big world event like these there are people out there lying about them, trying get rich by pandering to the looneys who are gullible enough to buy into their garbage alternate scenarios.
Go onto any YouTube video on any of these topics and you will see a hard core of morons spewing their hate in the same way im_jibi does. Idiots the lot of them. They're convinced they're right though, yet none of them has a single fact between them that would stand up to peer review or in a court of law.
