A MAN has been rushed to hospital under police escort after his arm was severed in a serious industrial accident at Magellan Aerospace.

A man in his 20s, whose arm is believed to have been completely cut off, was taken to Southampton Hospital around 1pm with a police escort in attendance to clear roundabouts and keep the way free of traffic.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and inspectors are already on site beginning and investigation.

Mary Walker, HR manager for the company, confirmed there had been an accident. She told the Echo: “Incidents like this happen very rarely and we certainly want to get to the bottom of it.

"A rigorous investigation has begun and we are working with the Health and Safety Executive. Our thoughts are with the injured employee and their family.”

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance service said: “We received a call at 12.34pm to a patient at a Bournemouth address with serious arm injuries. A male in his mid 30s was admitted to Southampton General.”

A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed that they had been called to provide a fast escort for an ambulance to Southampton Hospital at 12.57pm today.

The condition of the injured man is not known at this time.

Magellan is an international business which provides aerospace systems and components, including for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 helicopters and military vehicles.

What does Southampton hospital have that Poole or Bournemouth don't?

I believe they have a much higher skilled surgical team with broader knowledge than Bournemouth

Because Southampton Hospital is the Regional Trauma Centre for the area. If the injuries are life threatening/changing
, the Ambulance Crew may make the decision to go to Southampton as they have the facilities to deal with this type of emergency. Thoughts go out to all involved.

I wondered that too. I suppose if you have a police escort the ambulance can get to Southampton in 35mins. If the air ambulance was 20mins away, by the time they land, assess, then load someone in the time advantage from air ambulance is eroded. Plus two paramedics can work on him compared to the narrow confines of the air ambulance. Anyway armchair analyst over and out!

Best of luck to the fellow involved. Hopefully his employer will take very good care of him.

This gent is suffering major trauma, which will activate the trauma bypass system ... It being a "long bone" injury.
This bypass means UHS is the appropriate ED, with the widest range of specialists available immediately on arrival in Resus.
He will be conveyed by road because either HeliMed is committed on another job, too far away or unavailable due to weather.
BASICs dr's will have been paged to attend and assist en route. This gent will receive the best pre-hospital care, as ambulances are now stocked with army designed tourniquets and transexamic acid to stem blood flow.
He will stand the best chance of surviving ever. He may lose a limb but will probably keep his life. All the best to him.

Whoever wrote that comment about an arm n leg in taxpayers money is the most stupid inconsiderate idiot ever. within a day of it ahppening you make a comment like that. You prove you have the smallest mind imaginable and you should suffer a worse fate for mocking other peoples misfortunes. You prove you have no life and your doing nothing with it, for you too care so much about taxpayers money being spent on vital emergency services. I actually hate you.
