A PENSIONER has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a 94-year-old woman.
Police announced on Friday evening that the man had been charged and he appeared in court the following morning.
The arrest follows an alleged attack at a nursing home in New Milton on Thursday March 7.
Ronald Barham, aged 73 and from Three Acre Drive in Barton-on-Sea, appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.
The court heard he had been charged with attempting to murder Elsie Barham at the Quaker House Residential Home in Barton Court Road, New Milton on March 7.
Dressed in a blue shirt and trousers, he stood in the dock and spoke only to confirm his name and address.
At a brief hearing on Saturday, his barrister Jonathan Simpson said his client had mental health issues.
The father-of-two was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at Winchester Crown Court on April 4.
Police had announced on Friday evening that detectives at Lyndhurst had charged Ronald Barham with attempted murder.
They said the charges followed an incident on the morning of the previous day in which a 94-year-old woman was alleged to have been assaulted.
