VIDEO: Sand shifting at Southbourne to finish this week

BIG JOB: Thousands of tonnes of sand are shifted from Southbourne beach BIG JOB: Thousands of tonnes of sand are shifted from Southbourne beach

WORK to shift thousands of tonnes of sand westwards towards Boscombe is expected to finish this week.

Diggers and trucks are being used to reverse the drift of 10,000 cubic metres of sand that has moved over time towards Southbourne.

Bournemouth council decided it was cheaper to return the 10,000 cubic metres back towards Boscombe rather than bring in new material, with the work starting at Gordon’s Corner.

Cllr Rod Cooper, Bournemouth council’s cabinet member for tourism, said: “It is very important this is done and it’s unfortunate that much of the sand has been washed away. It’s vital to preserve the beach as it’s the main tourist attraction.”

Last year sand that had been moved by the wind and waves towards Bournemouth pier was moved back towards Alum Chine in a similar project.

What on earth is nature thinking about having the audacity to move some sand.

I believe a company in New Zealand has pioneered "sand glue" to help keep beaches in one place

They should have got in touch with King Canute - he would soon have put a stop to the shifting sand - NOT.

The question remains.

Why is that narrow space between Boscombe pier and the first groyne is the only bit of the whole beach to be replenished ?

Could it be that the reef is the cause of the dramatic loss (not elsewhere) and/or the council has a 'special duty' to the owners of Moneycombe block of flats ?

ps how much is this last bit of repair work costing ?
