MUSIC students from across Dorset joined a masterclass to hone their skills.

The Broadstone Music Series hosted brass and string workshops for 64 young musicians at St Nicholas church, Corfe Mullen, under the tutelage of players from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO).

Alison Kay, music director of Poole Society for Young Musicians, which puts on the Broadstone Music Series, said the students’ improvement was evident when they played afterwards.

“It was such a huge success and everyone had a wonderful time,” she said.

“They learned so much from the tutors that they were playing differently by the end of the day.”

The BSO guest tutors were Robb Tooley, trombone, Ed Lockwood, horn, Kate Turnbull a principal violinist and Maxime Tortelier, who has the title of the young conductor in association of BSO.

Mr Tortelier is the son of the conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier and the grandson of Paul Tortelier, a world-famous cellist.

The Poole Society for Young Musicians is run by volunteers.

They welcomed youngsters ranging from 11 to 21 for the workshops.

Alison added: “The kids had an amazing time, full of learning and fun.

“We cooked for them at lunch, then broke up the afternoon with a zumba class when a visiting fitness instructor joined us.

“There was a lot of hilarity during that.

“Afterwards, they did more work followed by a concert at 5pm when they performed in groups to a packed church.

“People could not have spoken more positively about the whole day so we hope to follow this with similar events.”

The price was reduced for the students due to a donation from the Bela-cqua Charitable Trust, which gives youngsters opportunities in the arts.

  •  ADVANCED young soloists will feature on piano, strings, woodwind, brass and vocals in a concert on April 21 at 4pm.

Donations will be taken at the Broadstone Music Series concert starting at 4pm.
