Disability awareness campaign launched in Dorset

A NEW campaign against disability-related harassment designed by college students has been launched across Dorset.

Speak Out aims to give disabled people the confidence to come forward and report bullying or harassment whilst ensuring that they are given the support and advice they need.

The campaign, created by young people from Bournemouth and Poole College, has been supported by local councils in Dorset, the Crown Prosecution Service, Dorset Police and other local organisations.

Cllr Lawrence Williams, cabinet member at Bournemouth council, said: “Many people are shocked to hear that disabled people are victims of bullying and harassment.”

Detective Superintendent Garrick Smith said: “Dorset Police is concerned that some victims of disability-related harassment are not reporting incidents to the police.

l Victims of hate crime can report incidents by contacting Dorset Police directly on 101 or can log onto Dorset Police website or their local authority website.

Very well done for raising this issue. It is never ever acceptable to harass or bully disabled people, and the sooner the low lifes who do this are stopped, the better.

Well i wonder if part of it is the attitude put forward by the Government and certain sections of the media who for the past year have been attacking the disabled at every chance they get. They have been accused of faking it to claim benefits so now have to go through an assessment (not a medical) by an IT company and disability groups have seen an increase in attacks since this began. The joy these papers show when one of the many hundreds of thousands of disabled people is actually found to be faking it is disgusting.

Bournemouth's involvement in this initiative is very laudable. However, let's not forget Bournemouth Council are about to make 19 disabled people redundant at Dorset Enterprises.
