DORSET companies have pledged £250,000 of support to help the birthday celebrations of the South West Coast Path go with a swing.

And broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, will be walking a leg of the Great South West Walk in April.

Held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the South West Coast Path Association, the whole of the 630-mile coastal path around Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, will be trekked in April and May in 56 sponsored walks.

“It is vital that anyone wishing to take part and enjoy one or several of the legs of the walk registers by March 4,” said Ken Carter, chairman of the committee.

“But we’re keen that people don’t leave it until then, as there is much to organise.

“So I’m delighted that – thanks to the generosity of local businesses – we are able to offer those that register now an extra special thank you for taking part.

“This includes discounts on accommodation at some of the region’s best hotels and self-catering cottages that cover the length of the coast path.”

Supporters of the event include Mr Dimbleby, South Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty patron, who will be walking a Devon leg on April 16.

“I am pleased to join in the walk to raise awareness of the campaign and to raise funds for the path to be given some much needed care,” he said.

West Dorset Leisure Holidays, Helpful Holidays, Encounter Walking Holidays and Contours Walking Holidays are among businesses offering special incentives and rewards and legs of the walk are also being sponsored by some of the companies, including Tom’s Field, as it passes along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

Details of offers from businesses are on the GreatSouthWestWalk.co.uk website and teams four-plus strong will be entered into a draw for a picnic hamper of West Country produce to enjoy during their walk.

As far as I know there has been some dispute who should maintain the pathway along this part of the coastline, in particular Durdle door/Lulworth.

I don't even know whether the pathway is accessible.
