UPDATED: Three local Blockbuster stores to close

Blockbuster to close a further 164 stores Blockbuster to close a further 164 stores

THREE local branches of the DVD and games rental chain Blockbuster are to close.

The administrator for the business has announed another 164 closures.

They include the branches at Holdenhurst Road in Bournemouth; Wimborne Road, Oakdale; and Crownmead, Wimborne.

Administrators said the staff in the stores affected by the closures will be facing redundancy.

The latest planned closures, which threaten around 800 jobs, come on top of the 160 shops already identified for closure by Deloitte.

Blockbuster collapsed last month amid competition from internet firms and the digital streaming of movies and games.

Blockbuster has 528 stores in the UK, employing 4,190 staff.

Having started with 528 stores at the time of its appointment, Deloitte will continue to look for buyers for the stores not currently up for closure.

Joint administrator Lee Manning said: ''We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the company for sale.''

''We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course.''

The 164 stores identified today employ an average of five members of staff and will close over the coming weeks.

Deloitte said: ''Staff in the stores affected by the closures will be facing redundancy. A dedicated employee helpline is in place and the company is running an employee assistance programme to help those staff facing redundancy find other jobs.''

Customers will be notified in advance of the closure so that they can return their outstanding rental items beforehand. The standard rental terms and conditions remain in place during this time.

Blockbuster struggled to adapt to the changing market and rivalry from internet retailers including Netflix, Amazon's LoveFilm and iTunes, which now offers a movie rental service.
The devastating impact of the internet on Britain's high street had already been laid bare with the demise of camera chain Jessops and electricals group Comet, which also cited competition from online players as a major reason for their downfall.

In the Daily Echo’s area, there are branches at Holdenhurst Road in Bournemouth, Wimborne Road, Moordown, Bargates in Christchurch, Blandford Road, Hamworthy, Wimborne Road, Oakdale, Ashley Road in Parkstone and Poole Road in Westbourne. There are also two in Wimborne and one in Ringwood.

That's nice of you! People are loosing jobs so its not exactly good.

Perhaps teach your daughter to take the items back on time or face a fine.

Blimey how long does it take her to decide 'perhaps I should take back these DVDs that are now late'?

A week? 2? 3? 4?

They charge £1 per film per night late fees so she really didn't bother rushing did she.

What right did she have to keep hold of them?
If she didn't bother to take them back on time then she deserved the fine.
Stupid comment.

If any of the ladies at the Christchurch Branch are reading this I hope you jobs are ok.

You're all very nice IMHO and I haven't moaned once at my late fees.

Really stinks for the one on Holdenhurst Road. My family and I go to that one quite a bit and it always has business. Really sad for the people that work there. Always really nice.

The Hamworthy branch closes 17th Feb. So sad for the staff, and also the elderly and people without computers who like to go and browse in the shop and rent out their films. Also I very much doubt that the employee helpline will be of any use to the part time workers that have been treated so badly for some time now. Minimum wage, no extra pay for bank hols or when working till 1.00 in the morning stocktaking etc!

I've often thought it counter productive of them to fine people for not returning DVDs on time becuase it means those customers are 1) unlikely to pay the fine incurred and 2) unlikely to rent DVDs again in future (if the fine isn't paid) resulting in lost business. It would have made more sense to offer incentives for prompt returns.Still, too late now...

They should offer incentives to return something to them that legally belongs to them?
Jesus you worry me

Get off your high horse. Kids often forget to return things on time, usually because theyre studying for A levels or doing other things. Makes no business sense to levy a fine which most likely won't be paid and losing a customer in the process.

Hardly jobs that support a family. Not been there in years but from what I remember it was stoned kids working there part-time saving for the next x-box game.

Last time I went to the Holdenhurst Road one in the middle of the afternoon there was a 'back in 5 minutes' sign on the door. After waiting 10 (and others were already waiting when I arrived) I gave up. Not surprised it's closing.

chances are if she hasn't payed the fine, the dept will be sold on and she might start getting letters from a dept collecting firm. or if she's lucky it might be written off.

You. I suspect, had 'old school' parents. You know, the kind that don't make excuses but actually challenge you if you broke rules.

I did too. Great isn't it.

What a load of tripe. North Korea is based of unquestionable rules that are heavily punished when challenged. Not exactly a great place to live though.
.
You need to be firm with kids but if you want them to ever fill their potential they need to be encouraged to think for themselves and question rules they don't understand.
.
We're not just starting to see the results of bad discipline. It's been there for generations before. You're just too young to have seen it.

They do offer an incentive to return them on time. It's not having to pay a fine. Every dvd that is late is one they can't rent out.

This may very well have been a valid point in 1980. The reason they're closing is people living in current times just download what they want. The copies are infinite online.
