Going, going: inside the Imax as the demolition gathers pace Going, going: inside the Imax as the demolition gathers pace

These pictures from Bournemouth Council's demolition team show how work inside the soon-to-be demolished Imax is progressing.

The demolition has been on site since October, taking the building apart from inside in preparation for the more dramatic demolition work due to start this month.

Cranes and demolition equipment will be moving on site this week.

You can compare these pictures with our Inside the Imax panoramas here.

I visited the Imax a couple of times when it was open (I know, I'm in a minority) and it didn't look much better then.

Surprised BBC want to publicise this, surely they should be pulling it down as quietly, as discretely and as quickly as possible!

See Star Trek 2 is coming out first on IMAX. Trip up to Southampton to see that then. Shame Bournemouth doesn't have an IMAX cinema. If only there was a suitable building in the town centre...

BBC - always first at moving our town backwards.

It would disappear a lot quicker if they just blew it up.

You'll all have to find something else to moan about! Alas, that shouldn't be too hard

Once the Imax is gone it will be the pier head building that is too big, is ugly and obstructs the view.
The BIC is an eyesore too!

err no

You cannot build flats on the pier head, though if it was possible I'm sure there would be plans to do so, under some spurious regeneration, providing a much needed amenity etc

With regard to Markmag, they could rip out the inside of the council offices and put an IMAX in there ,Not a lot goes on in there it's more like an asylam.

An Imax theatre might have been a good idea for Bournemouth.. hmm.. let's think....

So - an Imax cinema for Bournemouth? ....could be sited anywhere.
Totally closed in space - no daylight is an essential requirement - no one needs to see what's going on outside. So it doesn't need a particularly special location...

'I know - let's build it on a prime site, right on the sea front!'.....

'Don't be silly, no one could be that stupid'.......

IMAX films are far and few between and rely on 3d films to fill the cinema which can be shown in any theatre now with projection technology also many cinemas are now streaming special events live via satellite..IMAX has gone the way of CINERAMA ..and putting one on the sea front just borders on stupidity..and begged to fail because who in their right mind would go in howling rain in the winter to the sea front to watch a film being shown in the town centre? Duhhhhh
