WATCH out. That’s the advice from police who have seen an old scam return to the streets of Bournemouth.

Officers in Winton have asked members of the public to be on their guard against conmen who claim to be desperately in need of petrol for their cars and ask for money.

In each case they offer to sell allegedly valuable watches to their victims or to leave watches as security for cash.

But the watches are cheap imports and virtually worthless and the victims have not seen the tricksters since.

Sergeant Steve Houston of Dorset Police said one elderly man in his 70s was approached but did not hand over any cash.

Another parted with £35 after being convinced the watches were valuable.

“Do not fall for it” he said.

“Be aware of what you are getting yourself into – if something looks too good to be true it usually is.

“This is a regular scam. We don’t want people to hand over good money for shoddy, cheap, imported watches.”

Sgt Houston said one offender was described as a young man, possibly Italian, driving a small, blue car. He initially attracted the attention of his victim by asking for directions.

Any other victims or those with information are asked to call Dorset Police on 101 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
