CARTER Community School in Poole has been named the second most improved school in the country.

Last year the Hamworthy secondary had the 10th worst results nationwide with just 21 per cent getting five good GCSEs including English and maths.

This year the figure has risen to 46 per cent and head Rob Davies is confident that higher standards are here to stay.

He said: “Last year 21 per cent was not a true reflection of the school but it was the results that we turned in because of problems with maths.

“This year we have delivered fantastic results in English, maths and science, which are absolutely key, as well as other subjects.”

He added: “We are really delighted with the results but this is not the finish. We are adamant that we are going to move further forward as our teaching gets better.”

Mr Davies said vocational subjects are also proving to be successful and added: “What really matters is the progress that people make while they are here.”

The school was inspected by Ofsted late last year and was rated good.
