Rare hoopoe bird spotted in Hamworthy garden

Resident Karen England spotted a rare feathered visitor outside her home on Saturday afternoon which she identified online as a hoopoe.

“It flew off before I could take a picture of it,” said Karen. A striking bird with a pinkish-brown crest, one occasionally turns up on the south coast, overshooting on migration from Africa to Europe.

I'm no expert but coincidentally there was a flock of Waxwings spotted in Lytchett Matravers. Reported in the "Echo" January 9th with photo.

For the past week we have been hearing quite loud calls at all times of the day and night. We have heard it at 7am, 7pm 11pm, 12am, 1am and 2am and it is unmistakably a Hoopoe. Sadly whenever I have heard it it is dark so I haven't been able to see it. There are videos on YouTube of calling Hoopoes and that is exactly what we have heard. I live at the Branksome Wood end of Parkstone Avenue. I wouldnt be at all suprised if this is the same bird.
