UPDATED: Section of Old Christchurch Road closed

THE police cordon in the centre of Bournemouth has been reduced.

A large stretch of the busy Old Christchurch Road was shut this morning because of smoke issuing from an electrical supply box under the pedestrianised area.

The road was closed from the beginning of the pedestrianised section near Barclays to the Halifax bank.

The area was cleared of shoppers and shop workers were told to stay inside until fears of an explosion subsided after the supply was isolated.

The cordon has been reduced to cover the manhole area only but the electricity to many of the business nearby has remained off while Scottish and Southern Energy work on the fault.

It's done this before when it rained lots, and they dug a huge hole in the road to 'fix' it. Clearly didn't do a very good job!

Still a very large hole in the road. Hopefully they fix it properly this time. Allegedly the fault was caused by the inspection cover being replaced last time this happened several months ago, and it not being supported correctly underneath, and the whole lot sank under the weight of delivery lorries, damaging the kit underneath.

STILL NOTHING. Still a ruddy great hole in the road, no-one working on sorting it out....
