Bournemouth gets its first snow - but don't get excited yet

Snow on the ground in Winton at lunchtime

Snow on the ground in Winton at lunchtime

First published in News

It's not going to close any schools or roads, but Bournemouth saw its first flurry of snowflakes this morning.

Reports of light snow in Poole, Christchurch, West Howe and Tower Park sent a ripple of excitement through Twitter, although there are no signs of serious snowfall today.

Freezing temperatures were also causing problems, with rubbish crews unable to collect green waste bins in Christchurch and East Dorset because the contents are frozen.

It is unlikely temperatures will rise before the end of the week. Where garden waste bins cannot be emptied, crews will return to empty them again on the next scheduled collection. Please do not report a missed garden waste collection.

Forecasters are still predicting "disruptive snow" for Friday, with an amber snow warning now in place for parts of the country.

It's still not clear how much, if any, snow will fall in Dorset and how much will fall as rain, with the Met Office saying "currently there is a good deal of uncertainty about intensity of snow and how quickly it will turn to rain in the southwest."

Be prepared for bad weather by checking gritting routes, salt bins and our driving tips for snow and ice in our bad weather section.

Don't forget, if it does snow heavily on Friday, we will be keeping you up to date with all the traffic and travel news, plus school closures.
