Could this be the weekend we get snow?

Bournemouth Echo: Could this be the weekend we get snow? Could this be the weekend we get snow?

THE Met office has issued a weather warning for snow for Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset on Friday, warning blizzard conditions may be possible.

While the rest of the country has seen up to 5cm of snow this week, so far Bournemouth's famous micro-climate has kept it mild and wet.

But with temperatures set to plummet again as the week progresses, forecasters say it's looking more likely that snow could fall.

Snow falls - but don't get excited yet

The warning says: "As the weather breaks down, there is the potential for a spell of snow to spread from the southwest.

"As winds strengthen, blizzard conditions are a possibility, especially over high ground. Accumulations of 2-5 cm are possible quite widely and in some locations, especially higher ground, 15 cm are possible."

Dorset County Council's gritters have spread 460 tonnes of salt on the roads so far this winter and  were heading out at 2pm this afternoon.

Ice on the A35 caused long queues and several accidents this morning while minor roads around the county were also said to be hazardous.

Make sure you're prepared for driving in snow and ice by reading the advice on our weather page.

Snow, ice and (mostly standstill) traffic at A35 Askerswell (Bridport bypass)earlier. I'd want a grit refund.. twitter.com/Loumat33/statu…

Somerset has a light sprinkling of snow and the A35 was being gritted at 3.00 pm. Doubt very much we'll get snow over the weekend in any significant amount. My friend lives in Alaska and sent me photo taken yesterday of her town. No snow anywhere. Usually its deep at this time of year. As she says "is the climate change taking a grip?"

I doubt it. My sister-in-law is on holiday in Slovakia at the moment, and the town where she is has had lots of snow - when they usually don't have any. It's swings and roundabouts probably.

What a load of cobblers! The 'rest of the country'? Some bits maybe. But why let facts stand in the way of getting copy in the paper.

At the moment it is looking like we could have some substantial snowfall in this neck of the woods tomorrow, quite unusual for the SW of the UK .

A couple of useful websites are below.

This first if for predicted rainfall or snowfall, snow is shown in pink. click on the numbered boxes to move the charts ahead. This time for the prediction is shown on the top left corner of the chart.

Both the below show current rain/snowfall with a 1/2 hour time lag but give you an idea where and what direction things are going.
