Robbery terror as two shops raided in one weekend

Robbery terror as raider takes cash Robbery terror as raider takes cash

A ROBBER who threatened staff at a Bournemouth shop before making off with cash is being hunted by detectives.

The raid happened at the Co-op in Cranleigh Road, Southbourne, on Saturday at 9.50pm.

Police are also investigating a second armed incident at the Sauflands shops off Smugglers Lane in Highcliffe last night at 7.45pm (see below).

Police said the Co-op robber was white, of medium build, around 6ft 2ins tall, and was wearing dark trousers, a dark coat over a grey hooded top, a baseball cap and a scarf covering his nose and mouth.

Neighbours said they had not heard any commotion on Saturday night and that such incidents were rare.

Jeff Whitemore, who lives opposite, said: “I haven’t heard of a robbery over there before. It’s normally quite quiet around here. I’m too old to worry about things like that.

“We sleep in the back and we didn’t hear anything. I’ve not seen any trouble over there for a long time.”

James Munday, who co-owns the Pizza Gourmet takeaway next to the Co-op, added: “It’s always a worry, but we have run pubs for many years and seen it all.

“There are little groups that cause trouble, but most don’t cause a problem. It’s concerning though.”

A resident close by, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s unusual, we’ve not had any problems out here before; we don’t see the police often.

“This is obviously not a regular thing.”

Another nearby resident added: “We didn’t know anything about it until we saw some police over the road.

“It’s not the first time; a few months back they had their door kicked in. It’s generally quiet around here though.”

DC Neil Third of Bournemouth CID said: “This was a distressing incident for the staff and I would urge anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact police.”

Staff in the shop said they could not comment on the robbery.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

In the second robbery, staff at a convenience store in Highcliffe were also threatened on Sunday night by a robber with a handgun.

The man made off with a quantity of cash from the Sauflands store just off Smugglers Lane at 5pm.

No-one was hurt.

The robber is described as around five feet ten, slim build, wearing dark trousers and a dark jacket. He wore a baseball cap and a scarf pulled up over his nose and mouth.

The description is similar to the robber who held up the Co-op.

Its about time we stopped criminal activity on our streets there are a lot of ears and eyes out there £500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction should do it. To be paid by the criminal. He will be talking about it at some point in a pub or club.someone knows something.

Ban hoodies and caps in shops, that way everyone can see the face.

Robbery is already banned. Not sure a robber will be deterred by a ban on covering his or her face

Thank goodness we live where we do, this sort of crime is a shock to us, big news! There are many parts of our country where this happens so much more regularly, and in the same shops over and over again! This co op was subject to this sort of crime once before and that was over 20years ago, that shows how little crime there really is around here. Thinking of the very friendly staff there, it must be awful for them!

Another Southbourne resident who seems to think that the area is somehow 'a cut above' other areas.Armed robbery is rare in most areas, although there will be a rise in crime levels due to the Govts policies. This is just the beginning...

Also you have a notorious estate not half a mile from Co-Op.Full of junkies etc. When I was living in the area it really was quiet.Just a massive field & a respectable Council estate in Northey Rd & a few along Lingdale & Cranliegh Rd.Last I visited the area I was saddened by the look & feel of the place.Typical cheap, 'Cheek By Jowl' Social housing.A sorry mess & rather depressing.Glad I grew up before they closed the school & done away with the fields...

I really dont think Southbourne is "a cut above" i am one of those council tenants and have lived in my house for 20years, bringing 3 children up here, i can assure you we know the problems building a new social housing estate brings!! However, instead of moaning about it myself and some other local people have worked together to improve the area, by creating better community cohesion. Yes the history of that estate is notorious, but things have changed, unless you live here you would know though as its not newsworthy to print " Residents live in happy peaceful neighbourhood"
However "this area" actually meant bournemouth as a whole!

I didn't know there was a "notorious" estate in Southbourne.

What's it called?

Opposite Lingdale Rd.What used to be school fields, sold off by the Council.Closed down a great school with fantastic amenities etc & kept open Winton Boys School??

Has been in the Echo many times since it was built.I remember driving through & it reminded me of visiting inner city London...

Being obtuse are we?

Being obtuse are we?”

I certainly am because no amounting of re-reading your reply makes it any clearer as to the name of this phantom "notorious" estate, which before today I did not know existed.

Most estates have problems of some
sort because of the density of houses
and lack of amenities.

Adopt New York's Three Strikes law. One offense - lenient. Second offense...minor custodial sentence and probation. Third offense - 25 years no parole. OK. This is the UK. Make it 15.

It focuses minds. Many felons find 'religion' after the second conviction.

Pity there are not more people like sunny southbourne out there who obviously work hard to improve their lot and he or she certainly has my support..l have never lived on a council estate but when l was at school a lot of my school mates lived on them and they were almost all from thoroughly respectable families so please don't tar everyone with the same brush
