Businessman asks for new lease on Druitt Hall

A businessman has written to Christchurch Council chiefs asking them to lease him Druitt Hall so he can give it a new lease of life for the community.

Lawyers for Dr Alistair Ford say he wants take up the lease on the town centre building on April 1 for three years. He would then refurbish it at his own expense within eight weeks.

Last week, campaigners persuaded the planning committee not to agree to the council’s own request to demolish the town centre facility which they say is well used and much needed in the town centre.

Dr Ford, who has supported the campaign, also wants to see a new centre built in Druitt Gardens as a replacement in the longer term.

He says following its construction he would transfer his interest to a charitable body that would be responsible for its future management and maintenance.

He told the Echo: “I have made these offers to the council, through my solicitors, in good faith and I hope the council takes this seriously.

“I’d like to think they have taken heed of public opinion and that they will negotiate with me in good faith.”

Dr Ford’s solicitor, Lionel Fynn of Horsey Lightly Fynn confirmed that the letter has been sent to the Civic Offices.

“He is very keen to ensure that the current Druitt Hall remains open for the use of residents while plans are advanced for a new hall nearby,” he said.

The refurbishment would include new kitchen and toilet facilities, replacing the current flooring and decorating inside and out.

Strategic Director of the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership, Neil Farmer said: “The Council has received correspondence from representatives of Dr Alistair Somerville-Ford and will give the proposals contained in the letter due consideration.

Any decision regarding a potential lease of the Hall would need to go before the council’s Resources Committee for determination.”

Chairman led firm for 17 years

Dr Alistair Ford is chairman of the global training company ICM – Institute of Commercial Management.

The company, which is now based at Ringwood after 17 years in Christchurch, is an awarding and examining body for business and management students.

Dr Ford is also an international consultant specialising in business, tourism and human resource development, giving technical advice and assistance to trade associations, government departments and agencies.

He received a special award from Prince Charles in 2001 acknowledging his many years of work in the field of heritage and conservation of historic buildings.

“The Council has received correspondence from representatives of Dr Alistair Somerville-Ford and will give the proposals contained in the letter due consideration".
.
Oh really?
.
This is an precis from Dear Leader Nottage's blog re Druitt Hall. Note the ONE person who understood his dilemma.
.
We had a very interesting discussion with a resident about fund raising for Druitt and I have to say I was encouraged that at least one person understood our dilemma.
.
CBC was left 'between a rock and a hard place'. That there was no budget or likelihood of tax payers monies being available due to the stringent income cuts we are experiencing was also understood.
.
Good luck Dr Alistair Somerville-Ford, you will need it against a man who is so adamantly opposed to the social benefit the hall represents.
.
Then again, why would one expect Tories and social benefits go hand in hand?

I should think that Christchurch Borough Council would be happy for ANY legitimate interest to invest and save this property, seeing as the Council has no funds. A gift, really.

To the skeptics: the alternative is to flog the site off to the highest bidder. Dave Wells perhaps?

Stick with a real chance for something. It may not be perfect, but it may be the best choice.

Last year CBC spent over £150,000 of Council money plus £185,000 Sustrans grant ’improve’ Druitt Gardens. (Final Cost Less existing capital funds of £44,000 was £121,034.65 as quoted in Item 5 Cost Plan Druitt Gardens ) This is an astonishing sum considering the claim that austerity necessitates demolition of Druitt Hall.

Far from motivating a refusal of funding, austerity should encourage the Council to work positively with this benefactor.

But not a win for the councillors whose ego will take a battering since they did not want the hall in the first place.

It's about time all the councillors got together and did what is best for the people who voted for them and NOT what they think should be done its our town we should have the say and yes you lot of dithering councillors, we want the Druitt Hall and we should have it. Goodness me someone is willing to pay for it from their own pocket, so that means the CBC does not have to pay a penny, meaning more in the kitty for the expenses claims the councillors put in for.
Ah I think I have struck a cord, the more meetings they have on these issues the more claims they put in for, could this be a fact.!!

Having read todays Blog by the Leader 14/1/13. I have no hope whatsoever that the residents wishes will be listened to. Highcliffe Castle seems to be the "flavour of the month". I do hope that the "dis-interested" local residents will get together to voice their "dis-interest" once again!

The Leader of Christchurch Council is allegedly the most arrogant person you will ever meet, so are you surprised that no notice is taken of the feeling of the local townspeople. David Brent and Jim Hacker come to mind.
