Crime on Townsend estate plummets by 20 per cent

CRIME on Bournemouth’s Townsend estate has plummeted by 20 per cent during the past year with the number of antisocial behaviour incidents down by almost a quarter.

The Dorset police figures were released at a meeting of the Townsend Together Team when members heard how three Acceptable Behaviour Contracts had been issued to young people on the estate and drugs had been seized at two properties.

Overall crime has dropped by a fifth on the once troubled estate and residents are being urged to report incidents of antisocial behaviour to the police.

Townsend Together Team chair Claire Geraghty said: “The reduced crime figures are really positive for Townsend; it’s amazing when you consider the problems the estate suffered just a few years ago.”

A decade ago bus services on Townsend were suspended following a spate of attacks on Yellow Buses, amid fears for the safety of drivers as well as passengers.

Claire added: “Children living on Townsend have more respect for their surroundings now; through joint efforts with the youth club more activities are being organised to keep them off the streets. The BMX track is also proving popular and we are still trying to find funding for a concrete skate park.”

Residents of all ages joined forces to give the outdated BMX track a makeover, working tirelessly to spruce up the much-needed attraction using hand tools and a digger.

Claire said: “Our football team is doing really well; young people on Townsend used to get into trouble through boredom. Thankfully, these days, there is a lot to keep them occupied.”

Just think how much better the deprived areas of Bournemouth would be now if the money our wonderful Council has wasted on the Imax and surf reef had been spent on improving them instead.

its better there now because all the young ones who caused trouble have grown up and moved out of the estate

when there was trouble there it was due to no youth club no bmx track all there was to do was get out your face on drink and drugs

the trouble got sorted out by pc lowther as he was the only one who cared about the area and the kids

Perhaps some of the residents finally got fed up of saying and doing nothing? Or fed up with stupid people being given properties for them to wreck while the neighbours have to sit by and put up with it? I for one would be glad to get rid of the morons who dump their bags of rubbish on the side of the road for cats/dogs/foxes to spread out. Well done Townsend! It's the stupid, selfish idiots who ruin it for everyone else who lives here.

This figure could equate to one criminal eventually being put behind bars or moving from the area. Unless the total number of crimes in the area are itemised 20% is meaningless. The number of crimes should be reducing anyway due to modern cars being impossible to steal, CCTV improved home security etc.

20% equated to one criminal would be quite a big one man crime wave! I think the stats are itemised somewhere on the Dorset Police website as I seem to recall seeing it on the Echo a while ago - just type in your road name or postcode and it should give you a breakdown of the crime types in that specific area.
