Thug who stabbed Nick Verron with a screwdriver set to be released

ASSAULT: Jason Teelin ASSAULT: Jason Teelin

A THUG who wrecked his victim’s life when he stabbed him in the head with a screwdriver will be released from prison next week less than three years after being given a seven-year sentence.

Jason Teelin will be free from January 11 while his victim Nick Verron continues his struggle to cope with the devastating injuries he received.

Nick’s mum, Sue Vincent, has condemned Teelin’s early release and said her son is serving a life sentence.

Legally most prisoners only serve half of their sentences behind bars with the rest served on licence in the community. Time spent on remand before sentence is also taken into account meaning Teelin will have served half by the time he is released on Friday January 11.

Sue told the Daily Echo: “It is not right that he should be released. I understand the law but that doesn’t mean it is justice. “Teelin will be offered all sorts of help and will be treated better than Nick.

“I hope he takes all the help offered to him and turns his life around.”

Nick was 25 years old and living with his girlfriend in Bournemouth when he encountered a group of youths in Roumelia Lane, Boscombe in July 2009.

Witnesses heard Teelin, who was 17, threaten Nick before stabbing him, causing severe brain injuries.

Doctors warned Nick’s family he was unlikely to survive but he started to breathe on his own and has fought to recover ever since.

His hearing, vision, speech and mobility have all been affected but he managed to walk a few steps unaided for the first time last month.

The Daily Echo has also reported how he is engaged and plans to marry next year.

He said: “It’s not right that he’s coming out of prison but I’ve got to look to the future and concentrate on getting better.”

He hopes to walk his fiancée, Faith, down the aisle later this year.

The criminal justice system has let us down yet again. It's a shame that we couldn't outsource 25% or so of the incarcerations to 3rd world countries where the cost of running the institutions would be considerably cheaper (Pakistan, Albamia, Nigeria etc). We could then send the most serious offenders and foreign nationals to these and free up more space for the likes of Teelin to serve out a sentence more apropriate for the crime committed, which should have been a minimum of 10 years in this case at a 3rd world run institution. In an ideal world Teelin's parents should also have been investigated to find out it if there was a lack or responsible parenting that contributed to this individuals behaviour. What a contrast between Nick, who had obviously worked so hard and achieved so much at a young age and the vile thug that attacked him.

This is a disgrace. I don't know Nick, but I hope he continues to put all of his energy into his continuing rehabilitation to succeed in his wish of walking his future wife down the isle and doesn't waste any of that precious energy thinking about that low life piece of scum. He's simply not worth it. Good luck for the future Nick.

Why bother sentencing someone for 7 years if they only serve half? This man is only just able to walk five steps at a time and his attacker is out within half his term? That's not justice.

Yet another misreable example of failed justice from our so called, best in the world, legal system. We have laws for just about everything you can think of in this country, and yet there is still no justice for the victims of these, and other similar crimes that are reported in this paper and others on a daily basis. It really is a national disgrace that the government dooesn't take proper acton that reflects the will of the majority,as evidenced by the comments of others in this column. What we need in these cases is for a sentence that stands as a message to deter people that if you want to ruin someones life, yours will be ruined too. In this context a 7 years (3 years!!) will just not do.

'Let's hope Jason turns his life around'. Really? You're too forgiving. society is too forgiving.
They have no conscience and certainly no remorse.
Personally I hope his life fails, as long as he doesn't end up costing the taxpayer even more money.

manyogie says...

we have reached that tipping point where our prisons are no longer a deterant.
We need to reinstate capitol punishment for the lesser crimes, to release the burden on the prisons to do there job of keeping the more aggresive criminals where they belong.
We also need to revise this human rights subject, my opinion is that once you infringe crimminaly on someone elses human rights you forfeit your own.

It is time that each time a criminal is given a prison sentence, we told how short a time this really is. To be released having served less than half of his sentence for what was intended murder is disgracefull.
