Let's get behind the Cherries, says mayor of Bournemouth Let's get behind the Cherries, says mayor of Bournemouth

THE mayor of Bournemouth has urged the town to get behind its football team after the Cherries’ incredible unbeaten run.

Cllr Phil Stanley-Watts said he would like to organise an open-top bus tour for the team at the end of the season. AFC Bournemouth are in the playoff zone after notching up their 15th successive win on Saturday.

Cllr Stanley-Watts, a keen sports fan, said: “I’d like to get the whole of Dorset behind the team because they’re doing so well.”

He said an open top bus tour could be a good way for the town to congratulate the team, however their promotion efforts turn out.

“It would also welcome the manager, Eddie Howe, back to the club. He’s doing a brilliant job. I did tell them that when they had a reception on December 14,” Cllr Stanley-Watts said.

Thanks for your good wishes Councillor but I wonder if the proposed tour would be better carried out on a bandwagon!

Hate to disagree, but its about time the Council got behind the town's football team.
I think it's a great idea. The team and football bring a lot to the town, give them the support they deserve.

Where were the council in recent times when the Cherries were having bad times? Sounds like jumping on the bandwagon when it suits them to me.

What on earth is this about. It is just a childish game played by a few watched by a few more . What a fuss about nothing.

If they win 15 games in a row each of the players should get an open top Rolls Royce. I should think they all get paid enough to afford it!

It just goes to show that you can't believe what's written in the papers! 15th successive win? I don't think so. Try 15 games unbeaten. Poor journalism. End of, but we expect this from Newsquest publications.

If the journalism is so poor, why do you spend so much of your time reading it, and commenting on it? Wouldn't it be easier, and less stressful, to read a different paper?

They play for AFC Bournemouth not Manchester City.

This drip probably has never been to football and I wish we had won 15 in a row, seems the echo have nothing better to write about.

There is always someone who is completely ignorant. Football League clubs in the 21st century are far more than just a kick around on a Saturday afternooon. Football League clubs will have programmes involving children not only in football, but other sports and education. Also other community projects including involving the disabled in sport. A strong local football league club is an asset to a community in the 21st century.

No one loves supporting a winner more than Stanley-Watts; he would sell his own grandmother if it suited his interest. That is why he jumped ship from being a LibDem Councillor to become a Tory one when he saw that the Yellow Submarine was about to sink without trace in Bournemouth.
It is a shame that his recent bang on the head, that fortuitously, he can remember nothing about, failed to knock any sense into this attention seeker.
A bandwagon would be far more appropriate than open top bus for your regal parade, Stanley- Watts, as you would not have so far to fall if the worse should befall you again!

Dont quite understand why people post comments just to criticise how the article is written but despite any hidden agendas lets hope Councillor Watts gets his wish, after all its well deserved and the least we can do for AFCB and the fans

Most sensible comment on here, bar mine, of course.

Its quite a tradition for politicians to suddenly develop an interest in sport when teams are doing well. An opportunity to wallow in the glory of other peoples efforts is all part of the political circus.
.
I'm not a football fan but am really pleased that AFC Bournemouth are doing well. I'm all for the town celebrating this success just don't let the politicians hi-jack the celebrations.

Why not have an open-top bus ride for the councillors, to honour their acheivements in B'mth ?
