"Despicable" thieves robbed an elderly woman as she passed out at a bus stop.

The 70-year-old had fallen ill in Meeting House Lane in Ringwood between 1.45pm and 2.15pm on Wednesday November 21.

A number of people came to her aid, but someone stole her purse from a canvas shopping bag while she was unconscious.

The theft was not discovered until she was in hospital but by then her credit card had been used to put £50 credit on a mobile phone, and there was an attempt to get cash at a bank in Christchurch High Street.

CCTV shows a man and a woman with the shopping bag. Both appear to be in their early to mid-twenties. The man is of medium build and wearing a dark hooded top with an orange or gold motif across the front. He wore jeans and white trainers.

The woman has blonde shoulder-length hair and is of medium build. She wore a dark jacket and carried a black and white stripped umbrella.

PC Tom Neale said: “This is an opportunist and, frankly, despicable act.”

Anyone with information should call PC Neale at Ringwood police station on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.

What a horrible pair these 'people' are. Although I wish people would keep their purses in proper handbags! Thieves will take any opportunity to steal what isn't theirs and the amount of women I see with purses either carried in their hand, their open shopping bags or in a handbag but swinging in their hand. I have also seen purses shoved in the top of pushchair hoods. If you keep your things as close to your body as possible then at least you can feel it or it's harder to take.
Could the mobile phone company not track the credit sale down and do something? I personally dont class 70 as 'elderly' and the cctv image isn't very clear.
I hope this lady recovers well from this despicable theft and finds out why she fainted in the first place.

Despite police warning the public do not take enough care in crime prevention, spooki is quite right.

Terrible people hope that Karma or the police will get them soon. My best wishes to the poor lady. I wonder if her pin was on in he purse as they must have needed it to use the card, unless they signed and forged her signature. It is best to have a handbag or your purse or wallet in an inside pocket when shopping.

If this is the best photo the cctv can come up with, what is the point of having it? What about the shop one where they used the card, or the one from the bank? Even if they are caught, they will say they found the card and the police will have a hard job proving different with this type of photo.

Hopefully the bank will reimburse this lady. As it was used before it was reported stolen, I wouldn't be surprised to hear the bank said no. That's the sort of country we live in now.

I do hope the lady has recovered from whatever caused her to pass out, and she doesn't let these toerags get her down.

Hmm, good point Bob. Why do they bother with such poor quality CCTV pictures, those fuzzy silhouettes look like just about anyone.
