PRIME Minister David Cameron is among the contributors whose original drawings are being auctioned in aid of Dorset’s wildlife.

Dorset Wildlife Trust hit upon the novel idea of raising funds by asking celebrities and statesmen to tap into their artistic sides.

Mr Cameron submitted a signed finger drawing of a sheep, with the tongue-in-cheek comment “Thinking of ewe.”

Nikki Hoar, of DWT, told the Daily Echo: “We have close links to the highly respected wildlife cameraman Simon King, who agreed to put his name to the letter.

“Basically we sent celebrities out an ink pad and asked them to use a part of their body, a finger, toe, nose or even an ear, to create an image connected to British wildlife. This way there is a part of them in the picture.

“We have had a brilliant response, the drawings are still coming in.”

Wareham-based screen legend Edward Fox used his finger to draw a flower, while Prunella Scales opted to employ her foot to depict a duck. Supporters can bid on these drawings via an online auction until Sunday.

Each week a new set of sketches will drop onto the website. Aside from the premier – whose finger drawing goes online on November 29 – other famous names contributing include presenter Fearne Cotton, soap actor Shane Ritche and former Poole marine commando and politician Lord Ashdown.

Fiona Sansom, DWT supporter development manager, said: “Our first week’s auction has just ended with Susan Hampshire coming out on top with her lovely thumbprint flower.

“Thank you to everyone who has joined the auction so far.

“The fundraising event will help to fund vital conservation work in Dorset and we are very grateful for the support of all the celebrities.”

The Wild Art Auction will continue over the winter, with all proceeds going to protection of Dorset’s wildlife. Visit dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/celebritywildart to preview the drawings.
