Five hours of darkness: power cut takes out thousands of homes

THOUSANDS of homes in the Upton and Hamworthy areas were plunged into darkness last night, in some cases for more than five hours.
It affected a total of 6,727 properties.
Samantha O'Connor, spokesman for Southern Electric Power Distribution, confirmed this morning that that the problems had been traced to a different part of the network.
“We would like to thank residents for their patience during the interruption to the supplies. This was due to a fault with some of our equipment,” she said.
“Our engineers were able to restore the majority of supplies, however a small number were brought back on using a mobile generator."
The power was restored in stages, with the final properties coming back on just before 11pm.
One Hamworthy resident said: “At first I thought it was a fuse, then I looked out of the window and saw that everything else had gone out as well. I had dinner by candlelight. The power came back for about five minutes, then went off again until just before 7.15pm.”
Engineers are continuing repairs today to put all customers back on the network. No further interruptions to the supply are expected.

Read the article, it clearly says that it was not Wessex Waters fault.
Whilst I do agree that the roadworks are causing a lot of stress for people (including myself) I think that Wessex Water get a lot more flack than they deserve.
They are on target to finish early (good thing)
They are fixing other problems whilst they are there (good thing)
They are doing a good job of keeping the traffic flowing.
What would you rather they did?
Criticism is easy.
Suggesting a viable alternative is hard.

Hamworthy/Turlin Moor is unfortunate in that by design of Geography there is only 1 main road and no alternative options.

The complete closure was due to the storm sewer collapsing (which is separate from the household sewer) and runs under the other side of the road.
It was known that the sewer had some issues but it was the council's call as to what was due to happen to it.
Wessex Water did all involved a favour by assisting in fixing it whilst the road was partially closed - rather than the council calling them back as 'external contractors' a few weeks later to dig up the road again.
