A LORRY driver had a lucky escape after his truck clipped a car and flipped over on a major Dorset road.

The emergency services were sent to the eastbound A31 near Ferndown police station at around 1.45pm yesterday.

The carriageway was closed while the debris was dealt with, causing drivers problems into the rush hour as they diverted through Longham and Ferndown.

Speaking to the Daily Echo on the scene, PC Tim Brehmer, from Poole Traffic Police, said the lorry clipped a BMW that was stopped at the side of the road, over-corrected and hit the central reservation, ending up on its side.

“The driver of the BMW was out, which was key. The driver of the lorry suffered cuts and bruises,” he added.

PC Brehmer said the driver was lucky to walk away from the crash.

The eastbound carriageway was closed, while westbound one lane was shut going past the scene.

Which part of the roundabout that the lorry went through is the 'central resveration.' ???
I thought that, since they put the roads through the middle, there wasn't a 'central reservation' just two grassed areas.

Canford Bottom to Ferndown Police Station (Ameysford Road) .... the road inbetween the two has no central reservation

This accident has nothing to do with the new roundabout - Just been stuck in queuing traffic diverted through the roundabout to Ferndown (East Bound) for the last hour or so !

OK, I read it again, now please explain where the 'central resveration' is on a roundabout which was divided into 2 parts by roads running through it.

Looks to me that it's the beginning of the 4 lane part of the by-pass just after the police station roundabout heading east!

The only mention of roundabouts in the article is that they were the places from which diversions were in place. As far as I can see from the pictures, the accident occurred at a segment of ordinary dual carriageway, and the central reservation barrier did exactly what it was supposed to, preventing a more major incident.

The Canford Bottom roundabout is NOT where the accident was! It happened near the roundabout at the junction of A31 and Ferndown Industrial Estate / Police Station. OK?

Where does it say that the accident happened on or near the roundabout, it merely says the road is closed between the two roundabouts , this isn't to say the roundabout was involved in any way

Driver error again, i expect a 20mph limit on this road till the boffins can work out how to build a road that is 101% safe .. cuz i am sure it will be roads fault.

I was there when it happened, it happened on the dual carriageway between Uddens roundabout and Ferndown/Ringwood roundabout, just before the slipway that goes off to Verwood/Ferndown etc. The roundabout had nothing to do with it, as the accident was literally inbetween the two roundabouts, the car had stopped on the road, I think the lorry driver thought that the car was indicating to go onto the slip road but realised too late that the car has actually stopped, lorry must of tried to pull out too late smacking rear end on righ thand side of car this caused him to jack knife which in turn cause to career across both lanes hitting central barrier and then flipping onto his side. The lorry driver got out ok, but debris from the lorry flew across the west bound lanes

I suspect the problem with Canford bottom roundabout is obvious now thanks to iampuzzled, people obviously keep mistaking it for a dual caraigeway

Looking at the photograph it looks like it is east bound directly after the final set of traffic lights on the canford bottom roundabout where the 2 lanes filter into 1

While the accident had absolutely nothing to do with the accident, it certainly added to the frustration and confusion when the A31 was closed from it.
There is simply no plan 'B' the Police or Highway Authority have if any of the exits on to / from the 'roundabout' onto the A31 - eastwards or westwards - are closed for an emergency. In such circumstances all the traffic has to negotiate numerous sets of lights which let just a few cars through at a time, blocking local traffic into the bargain. I thought the theory of Chaos was established by Mitchell Feigenbaum. Now I'm not so sure!

apologies for my typo in the above. The first sentence of my comment should have read -

While the accident had absolutely nothing to do with the ROUNDABOUT
