WORK to resurface some of Poole's main roads will continue with Sandbanks Road on Monday.

The work, from the Civic Centre up to the end of the railway tunnel, is scheduled to take four days to complete.

One lane will remain open to vehicles for most of the time.

From 7.30am on Monday to 6am on Wednesday, vehicles will not be able to travel southwards from the Civic Centre roundabout towards Pottery Road. Northbound traffic will be able to pass as normal, although delays are expected. This arrangement will allow the council to resurface both sides of the carriageway in a phased operation.

In addition, from 7pm on Tuesday until approximately midnight, Sandbanks Road will be closed at the railway tunnel near Tennyson Avenue to enable the narrow section of road to be resurfaced.

During the works the main diversion route will be along the A35 Commercial Road, Penn Hill Avenue and Canford Cliffs Road.

John Rice, engineering manager, said: “To minimise disruption to road users we have scheduled the works to take place during half term when there is generally 15 per cent less traffic during this period.

"We have decided to restrict night time working and not carry out 24-hour working as this would cause unacceptable disturbance to local residents.

"We recognise that this essential work will cause some unavoidable disruption to road users and would ask motorists to allow extra time for their journeys and use an alternative route when possible."

Cllr Ian Potter, cabinet portfolio holder for planning, regeneration and transportation, said: “Road and pavement repairs are at the top of our residents’ list of things that most need improving in the local area. We have therefore embarked on an extensive resurfacing programme throughout Poole which includes Sandbanks Road. I would like to thank drivers in advance for their patience while these improvement works are carried out."

The resurfacing programme will also see improvements to Blandford Road, Queen Anne Drive, Magna Road, Alder Road, Wimborne Road and Ringwood Road between now and April 2018.
