A TEENAGER walked 60 miles by himself for three days to raise £645 for an armed forces charity.

George Hosking, 16, from Talbot Woods, went the distance by taking on his self-titled Base to Base solo walk for The Royal Marines Charity.

He walked from the HMS Devonport base in Plymouth through the Dartmoor National Park to the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon.

The cause helps Marines and their families to overcome challenges such as the transition to civilian life, poverty, life-changing injury, life-limiting illness and mental disability.

His mum Hillary said: "It was lovely. He is already thinking about what he can do next year. He's really single-minded and when he decides he wants to do something, he sees it through.

"He has spent the past five years at Bournemouth Collegiate School and they have really made him love the outdoors as he has done both his bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards there.

"He's just finished his GCSEs and rather than wallowing about or sitting around, he wanted to do something for the charity."

At the finishing line of his walk, George was met by his family including his mum and dad, Hillary and David, his brother Tom and sister Lottie. They were joined by the chief executive of The Royal Marines Charity, Jonathan Ball, and deputy chief executive, Sharky Ward OBE, who congratulated George on completing his mission.

Hillary added: "He competed in the Ten Tors Challenge in Dartmoor last year, which is arranged by the armed forces and he just wanted to give something back. He's also got a couple of family friends who were in the Marines.

"He wanted to do a walk across Dartmoor because he could camp there and then the second night he stayed on a campsite. He planned it all, including his routes, himself."

She said that George's dad, David, came to meet George a few times each day to make sure that he was safe and looking after himself, but otherwise they let their son get on with his challenge.

"He was hoping to raise £500, but I think he's up to £645 and with a few more donations already promised by people, I reckon he will get to £700."
