THE HARD WORK STARTS NOW
OWNER: Paul Baker
OWNER: Paul Baker

EMOTIONAL Paul Baker described AFC Bournemouth's D-Day as both "momentous" and also "one to forget".

Baker and new co-owner Alastair Saverimutto were last night offered an 11th-hour deal to ensure Cherries could stay in the Football League.

They were told the club could keep their place in League Two, providing it accepted a 17-point deduction for the new season, which starts tomorrow.

And the club must also agree to pay around £500,000 to its unsecured creditors, the amount offered when a company voluntary arrangement failed earlier this year.

Acceptance of the offer would see Cherries' Football League share transferred to the new company and also lead to the club finally exiting administration.

Cherries have been given until noon today to agree to the conditions, although speaking to the Daily Echo last night, Baker said signing the documentation would be a formality.

He added: "We are relieved and have got no choice but to accept. All everybody wants is to see us playing in the Football League at three o'clock on Saturday.

"My heart sank when I heard it would be 17 points. I was expecting 15 or fewer but we've just got to get on with it. There are other teams in similar or worse positions.

"It's one of those days when you think thankfully, we're still playing football but there are penalties attached.

"None of it was our fault and we're having to deal with the consequences but we knew that from the day we decided to take on the football club.

"It's great to know that the town will still have a league club and now we need the people of Bournemouth to support us and recognise we've still got a huge mountain to climb."

Asked whether Sport-6, the club's new owners, could foot the bill for the CVA payment, Baker replied: "The administrator will deal with that.

"He will tell us what terms it has got to be paid over and, once we know that, we will be able to speak to the unsecured creditors and take their views on it.

"We realise a lot of them are friends of the football club and we recognise that they have had their fingers burned in all of this.

"But we will try to paint the picture that if they wanted to waive their debt, they could see that it would be put towards making the football club stronger. We believe there will be some people who will be willing to do that."

Baker added: "We wouldn't be here if we didn't have a business plan to make the football club stand on its own two feet.

"We want to be able to put the right structure in place to make sure that it's a solvent football club and we're financially prudent in the way we run it.

"We can't go from coming out of admin and start throwing money about for the sake of it. We will make calculated decisions to strengthen the football club every step of the way."

Baker and Saverimutto, who jointly own Sports-6, a Liverpool-based sports marketing company, recently struck a deal to buy the club. They will form a new board of directors with current chairman Jeff Mostyn and vice-chairman Steve Sly.

Mostyn told the Daily Echo last night: "I'm absolutely thrilled that the Football League has shown the confidence in the new company to offer us the share back.

"I'm thrilled for the staff, the players and, most of all, for our supporters.

"I will do everything in my power to ensure that the club is not faced with the horrendous financial burden that it has been faced with over the past decade.

"I'd like to thank the supporters for their amazing patience and I hope that, once we start playing on Saturday, it will be a vindication of all our efforts to keep the club alive throughout the administration process.

"I'm delighted that Paul and Savi have joined Steve and myself as members of the new board and we will do everything we possibly can to steer the club forward to future success.

"Chairman is a position I've been proud to hold over the past 18 months and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to continue to chair the football club going forward.

"My support for the club will be as visible as it has always been and I will be playing a big part in ensuring that we drive the club forward.

"As a team, we have the right ingredients to take the club forward and I'm as committed to the football club as I've ever been."

The task required now is to set realistic objectives.

If we assume that AFCB would have been aiming to be champions at the start of the season this would have required cica 90 points. This means getting 10 points from every 5 games. So for me I would like to monitor against this measure. ie -7 after 5 games +3 after 10.

If this is maintained we would still have 73 and a play off place.

Positive beliefs and we can get there. What we mustnt do is worry how big the gap is in the early weeks and months of the season.

Like everyone else I am delighted that we still have a Club to support, no thanks to the FL though who seem determined to put Clubs out of business, and I hope that all the penalized Club's **** two fingers at them by avoiding relegation. As for the Cherries, I would feel more confident if they can bring another striker(s) in.I have reservations re Pitman and you can't rely on a single striker over a long and hard Season.

Tomorrow Richard pretend you are the boss of AFCB and monitor Brett as follows:
Pace-Does he go past players?
First Touch-How good is he at giving himself time on the ball. Can he hold it up well?
Decision Making-How many of his passes go to a Bmth colleague. How many are misdirected?
Heading Ability-How many balls does he win in the air.How many crosses does he beat his marker to.Does he direct his headers on target?
Goalscoring-How many chances does he create for others. How effective is his running off the ball in dangerous areas. How many shots does he get on target?

Then do the same at the next away game and notice any differences. Follow up home and away in 5 then 10 games time to monitor improvement.
Hopefully by the end of the season he will show whether he can become the finished product. You can use the basic rules of pace, strength, height first touch, football brain etc with every player you watch.
Ive managed teams in Devon for the last twenty years and am still learning something new every single day.
Most of all remember STRIKERS AND GOALS WIN MATCHES.

I think we all may have expressed some doubts that we would recover from this, but a big thanks to all those who have made it possible, it is now time to forget any differences we may have and get behind the club 100

I think we all may have had some reservations that this saga would ever end, but may I say a big thankyou to all those people who have made it happen, it is now time to forget any issues we may have had with various people and get behind the club 100%, give the new owners a chance to prove themselves and it is now up to all of us to ensure this does not happen again

i have to agree with bondy when he said how many good goal scorers are out there without a club. he will bide his time untill he finds the right man and not sign one for the sake of it.

So they magically managed to get hold of Mostyn from his holiday in Spain when he was unable to speak yesterday? Hmmmm.... Not realy the openness required from a chairman, is it?

My ex wife used to work for Mostyn, but not for long. She said he was one of the most arrogant and ignorant people she had ever met, (allegedly), so no change since then by the look of it

This will end in tears. Remember what happened to Exeter City when mystery new owners parachuted in from nowhere making absurd promises of cake tomorrow? Another pair of dreamers or asset-strippers?

If Mostyn can be moved on , it would be good for the club.

Mostyn has left a bad taset in a lot of people mouths!!!!

Not someone we should trust with the club, he is a Jonah !!

I agree with thes point about mysterious new ownwers from nowhere (aka Chester City). I hope they prove my fears unfounded.

It's 12:37 - did they meet the noon deadline demanded by the FL?

I still get the feeling there will be more twists and turns in the coming months.

Sorry to bring a little doom and gloom to the discussion, however everyone seems to have ignored the following bit of the interview

"Asked whether Sport-6, the club's new owners, could foot the bill for the CVA payment, Baker replied: "The administrator will deal with that.

"He will tell us what terms it has got to be paid over and, once we know that, we will be able to speak to the unsecured creditors and take their views on it.

In other words, no, we don't have the money!!!

There may be trouble ahead .........

You have hit the nail on the head bobr.... The trouble has only just started. That statement from Baker smacks of more promises and deals, no hard cash available to hand over. After Saturday's Euphoria has died down, lets hope we don't all end up with a huge hangover and no club to support by November. Let's all see past our noses and the next game!

when the final amount has been worked out and the period of time to pay it back has been decided, the payments should not cause to many problems, Trevor Watkins and his board managed it last time , and if I remember some of his board had quit almost before a ball was kicked

The trouble is that I haved watched him play for two Seasons now - hence my reservations. I haven't seen him this season, as yet, and hope that the reported improvment is continued, but do feel that another striker is a must.
