Relief for boss Bond
SPIRIT: Kevin Bond
SPIRIT: Kevin Bond

KEVIN Bond admitted he was "relieved" an end to Cherries' administration was in sight after the Football League's board delivered their verdict last night.

With just hours to go before the start of the season, the league revealed the troubled Dorset club would begin the campaign with a 17-point handicap.

And manager Bond, despite the timing of the decision, doesn't think it will be difficult to raise the spirits of his players before tomorrow's League Two opener against Gillingham at Dean Court.

"The timing is only an excuse if we want it to be," Bond told the Daily Echo.

"I don't think it will be tough to get the lads up. They'll all be disappointed because you hope for something better than that or hope for less to deal with.

"But they're professionals, like we all are, and it doesn't lessen our chances of winning football matches. It just means we have got to win more matches.

"If we go into it thinking we're hard done by, we're far less likely to put in the performance we want."

Bond, who said he was "relieved that it's all done and dusted", believes retaining league status must be the team's "number one goal", with a view to "pushing on" if and when that objective has been met.

Bond's men are not alone in their predicament, with Rotherham (-17) and Luton (-30) also docked points.

Now we know our fate, its time to get over it and get on and get stuck in on the pitch. If anything, the adversity of this will bond the players and fans together. As a supporter i'l do my best by going along home and away shouting and screaming as much as I can - all we ask is those connected with the club, players and officials do their bit and try their very best.

This is going to be a great season.

Whilst I am disappointed as the rest of us and think 17 points docked is over the top, we have a fantastic opportunity to turn this negative into a positive.

We can use this adversity to our advantage.

Whilst mid-table safety needs to be our target who knows where we could get to if we can recover the momentum of the end of last season.

Let's roar the players on tomorrow to 3 points and for the rest of the season in a way never heard before at Dean Court.

COME ON YOU REDS!

Great post.
The team to have benefited most from our points deficit is Luton.Mick Harford will be sending them out like Lions looking for raw meat in their pursuit of ourselves and Rotherham.
No point looking over our shoulder. Lets go out and aim to win every game and finish at least mid table.
Wouldnt it be lovely if Bond announces this afternoon the signing of another striker to help us on our way.
Best of luck tomorrow lads. We can win this game and get off to a flying start and three valuable points.

We lost 17 points last season courtesy of Begovich and Telfer and that was self inflicted
