Big Rob's case for the defence
 |
| COACH: Rob Newman |
ROB Newman believes taking individual responsibility will be key as Kevin Bond's men aim to lay a solid defensive foundation this season.
Cherries' assistant boss is in an ideal position to pinpoint what is required from the club's squad, having enjoyed a distinguished career as a defender.
The former Norwich and Bristol City linchpin, who made almost 700 league appearances, now has the task of passing on his knowledge to Cherries' backline.
And Newman has seen positives and negatives during Cherries' warm-campaign.
He told the Daily Echo: "We were all at sea in the first 10 minutes of the Dorchester game. Crosses came in and we didn't deal with them.
"We conceded goals from crosses against Portsmouth and Bristol City and it's something we know we need to put right because teams in League Two rely a lot on set-pieces so we've got to be strong.
"I think it's about seeing things before they happen. We don't react to things until they actually happen and then it's a 50-50 battle.
"We've just got to keep trying on the training pitch, but a lot of it has got to come from individuals on the pitch.
"The more they play together and work together as a unit on the training pitch, the more solidity we will get in our defending.
"It's so important you get yourself right and in the right position before the ball comes into your area. If you are in that right position, you should be able to deal with it comfortably."
Newman insists that hard graft was one way to iron out any problems: "It's about regimented practices on the training ground, but it's got to come from the individual as well.
"If players don't take responsibility, it drags other people out of position and becomes an Achilles heel. Pre-season games are for identifying and putting right, so that's all we've got to keep doing."
