New boy Baker keeps it simple
CO-OWNER: Paul Baker
CO-OWNER: Paul Baker

HE'S only been at Dean Court for five minutes, but already new owner Paul Baker is a fully paid-up pupil of the Alastair Saverimutto medical school.

After describing ailing Cherries as a football club on a life support machine in Saturday's Daily Echo, Saverimutto's Holby City-esque analogy was given a second airing by Sport-6 chief Baker at Dean Court yesterday.

And as the farcical side of Cherries' administration process slowly dissolved before the eyes of the press yesterday afternoon, a little bit of repetition was more of a relief than a chore.

"The football club has been on a life support machine for the past five months and it is in a period of intensive care," Baker reminded the media.

"Jeff Mostyn, along with Steve Sly, has held the intravenous drip throughout that period, but we're now getting very close to the period where the club will come out of intensive care and into a period of aftercare."

On first impressions, the pairing of Saverimutto and Baker is not a million miles away from that of Mostyn and Sly, who are set to move into non-executive roles following the Dean Court boardroom re-shuffle.

As well as his business interests, Baker oozes supporter enthusiasm in the same way as life-long Cherries fan Sly, with Saverimutto, or Savi as he is known, more comfortable in front of the cameras á la Mostyn.

But while Mostyn is often roundly criticised for his lack of communication with the fans and brisk "no comment" statements when hit with a difficult question, Savi, in his own words, "doesn't do off the record".

Away from the PR and into the finance, however, Baker told the media: "Any money coming into AFC Bournemouth is there as investment.

"Our initial share capital is set at £250,000 to meet the requirements of the Football League. The investment is seven figures and we've put significant funds in already to help the period of administration.

"At the present moment, we don't know what the sanctions are going to be from the Football League so I don't want to pre-empt anything the league may or may not do. I can't say any more than that."

When asked by the Echo if he considered the purchase of the club a bargain, Baker replied: "I think going forward it's the potential and the infrastructure that appeals.

"It's not the money to acquire the club that is important - it's the investment and how you deal with it.

"People will ask me, If you had £100,000 to go and buy a player, who would you get', but I would much rather spend £100,000 on the centre of excellence than on a player.

"That money is then in the infrastructure of the club to make sure that the building blocks are in place for a solid structure. I'd rather put the money in at the bottom and watch it grow from there."

With Cherries' transfer embargo partially lifted to enable Kevin Bond to bring in some much-needed strength in depth, Baker, whose business interests include a franchise in courier firm UK Sameday, was quick to confirm a manager's budget will be put in place.

Baker, however, would not be drawn on Bond's future should life in League Two get off to a less than satisfactory start.

He added: "We've had some great news today with the embargo being partially lifted which will enable Kevin to bring in some players.

"It's obvious we need to strengthen the squad in certain positions.

"A football manager knows he is in the results industry but we will give Kevin absolute support."

So, all very straightforward and clear-cut then?

And for once, it does actually appear to be exactly that - when was the last time a long-suffering Cherries fan could say that?

After the failed bid from EU UK earlier in the year and the Mostyn camp's split with Priory Homes owner Alan Pither's investment party (not to mention the ongoing Dean Court land deal with Pither's Bournemouth Holdings Ltd), the Dean Court support is an understandably sceptical animal.

But there does genuinely now appear to be some light at the end of the tunnel.

As a clearly relieved Mostyn said after yesterday's press briefing: "I'm as confident as I've ever been that this is it now."

What do AFCB fans think of a self-confessed Chester City fan – and former main sponsor and board member of the Deva Stadium club – taking over at Dean Court? Do you think Paul Baker really cares about AFCB or is he just in it to make money?

Is football a charity?? Are there any AFCB fans who want to risk all their money, no! I say good luck to them. Football is a business nowadays and if this self-confessed Chester City fans makes bundles out of us, then fair play to him cause is AFCB makes him money, that will inturn mean that we will be doing well on the pitch. Profit won't come without success. Why people would begrudge someone for earning, when they are the ones risking their money in the first place is beyond me.

N.B. - ALL SEEING EYE. (me) have no association with Kevvo or Lymo and the rumour is not true that I am the hero of McMahon of Highcliffe and he would advise that there is only one All Seeing Eye and that is me.
Sad I know, but the majority of my prophecies are coming true from the time 20 months ago when Mostyn first became involved with AFCB.

ALL SEEING EYE , you are spot on. They are all here to make a quick buck and do a runner. None of sport 6 care about the club. the ideas mentioned last night have been done before, and where did that get us? Anyway noone said how they would do anything, noone said how much money, noone said when. How exactly do they see us getting in the championship within 5 years? bu11sh1t. if this happens we will have to do a leeds to do it, ie spend 50 million quid plus that we dont have. Apparently we can get loads of youth team players from the surrounding areas because there are no other teams around here. its different to where sport 6 are from because they have tranmere, liverpool, everton, preston burnley, man u , man c etc. well according to 2001 figures there are only 65000 0-15 year olds in dorset. in merseyside 280000, in greater manchester 527000. I fail to see the goldmine of talent. how many players have come from dorset in the last 30 years. mark wright and jody craddock. anymore? great idea savi, but not going to really happen is it, and certainly not in their 3 to 5 year plan. we need hard cash and ownership of the stadium.

And whos going to put in this hard cash? And why would they, no businessmen in the right mind would! Firstly we need to be run as a business which is making money and creating turnover. At what point would a businessman who has no affiliation with AFCB, look at us as a business and think I am going to give them 3 million or whatever of my money!! Absolute dreamworld!

I am still aggrieved that there has been no mention by these bods of acquiring the ground back in the clubs possession. We CANNOT move forward effectively until this is achieved. Also there has been no threads on the club shop of which I believe is not in the clubs hands.

It is hard to avoid the comparison of JM passing to Baker with that of the old board passing to JM.

Although both comfortably off they have nowhere near the resources to run a football league club.

Just as JM is poorer after his involvement with the club so will Baker .....if it all still goes through.

I wouldn't **** on you if you were on fire, I can say without any doubt you would be the last person I would ever see as a hero, you have more names and changes than a library has books and I am certain you are posting even on this thread using at least 2, and the arrogance about what is going on is a joke, you have no more and idea than anyone else, so if you such an expert on all this then why not tell us all your name so we can judge for ourselves, all very easy being a keyboard warrior pathetic.

I agree completely Chubbs. I'm not expecting what i said but thats what we need. the rest of the spin coming from the 'new owners' is the same as everyone else has said in the past. hasnt worked before. why now? i trust these guys a lot less than the community club and the peter phillips regime too. who are sport 6? they have no business. its a scam. if they have business acumen why until today were sport 6 dormant? what do they do? its all spice with no substance and we will be in admin again, (that is if we get out of it at all) before too long. what is in it for them? where do they get their money from? they think they're going to recoup it through catering??? the club shop??? I'd rather have derek trotter in charge. What we need is unfortunately not going to happen. We are doomed. maybe a couple more years of struggling on but ultimately until harry retires and comes back to buy the stadium, we are doomed. and i dont expect that either. The other alternative is to do an Aldershot. But we sold the ground so we're stuffed. unfortunately a dreamworld is where all these supporters of sport 6 are.

I agree and whatever happens this lot have effectivly got the Club out of Mostyns control so if they actually get it and even I now suspect they will Yes lets support them because they have rid this Club of its worst threat for Years. Also I dont see a problem with Directors making money why not good luck to em. And in reality we are only replacing a lifelong Man City Supporter with a Lifelong Chester Supporter so whats the difference.

Its unbelievable that people think we are the same person when Lymocherry and me were locked in a rather heated exchange on here for days and ASE and me have fiffered on ocasions. Nothing wrong with that and most was settled. But it would appear that if anyone does not wear the blinkers and shows any kind of caution as to what is happening it could only be one person Priceless

Mostyn, who revealed he has only known Baker for two weeks, added that he planned to remain involved with club for the "long haul" and he may invest in Sport-6 at a later date.

Now we know which member of the admin staff was made Kit Manager look out Bond the boots will go on Saturday morning and then you will find out the new Kit Man only loaned them to you
