Mostyn defends his time at the helm
 |
| CHAIRMAN: Jeff Mostyn |
MUCH-maligned Cherries chairman Jeff Mostyn yesterday came out fighting after admitting he struggles to ignore criticism of his tumultuous tenure at Dean Court.
Speaking at the press conference where Paul Baker and Alastair Saverimutto were officially unveiled as the Dorset club's new owners, Mostyn defended his role in Cherries' troubles.
"People believe that Steve (Sly) and I have stood in the way of progress and that is the last thing we have done with this football club," he said.
"What we've done is we've brought the football club through its darkest days to where we are today. And I'm delighted we've been able to do that."
Mostyn and Sly will sit on the new company's board as chairman and vice-chairman in non-executive roles, while Baker and Saverimutto will be directors.
And Mostyn, who some suggested would walk away from the club after yesterday's announcement, revealed he would remain involved for the "long haul".
He said: "We'll be working very, very closely with Sport-6 to ensure our vision is achieved.
"It now happens to be a mutual vision but we'll be working as hard as we ever have been with Sport-6 to achieve it.
"This isn't a question of selling something, taking some money and disappearing. As I said earlier, I intend to stay on.
"Paul and I have also spoken about me having an interest in Sport-6, so that gives you an indication of my desire to go forward as a team.
"Nothing gives me greater confidence than to sit here and be proud to be part of a team that has the capabilities and finance to assist me.
"It's no longer a one-man
finance show.
"I think for the first time people will see a smile on my face that's not just relief that we can take this club forward."
Mostyn was keen to reiterate his belief that, in Sport-6, the company jointly owned by Baker and Saverimutto, he has found the right people to drive the club on.
After confirming the group had money to fund the remainder of the administration and further into the future, Mostyn added: "Our new partnership is not just about money. Those people involved in football will realise that, unless you've got a bottomless pit, money runs out very, very quickly.
"The club has at long last got to face the reality of playing football as a Football League club and look at its responsibilities in paying bills and in making sure that the expenditure does not exceed the income we have.
"This is where we find the strength of Sport-6. We have experts in football with business acumen, which will give us a solid platform, rather than a platform of sand, to build a future where we believe the football club will be in a financial position to meet its responsibilities."

Most of the JM and SS critics are the ones who would be at the very back of the queue to put £10 into the club (let alone thousands and thousands of pounds). Well done to JM and SS for taking AFCB through the last few months.

Why do youthink Mostyns critics wouldn't put a tenner into the club? Mostyn has no money, he's chairman in name only, no influence whatsoever and he'll be gone within a month.

Funny though the applause for him last night was warm. Obviously the critics are a smaller minority than people think. As to why they won't put a tenner in when you can complain about other people putting a tenner in.

whatever reservations people may have over what has happened in the past few months I feel it is now time to show our support for the club, forget the past and look to the future and give the new people the chance to prove themselves

Let's all stop moaning and get behind these new guys. They have talked a lot of sense. Agreed, talk means nothing unless it translates into results, but it looks as if they are there for the foreseeable future. History will tell whether M & S did a good job, so don't judge them prematurely.

Get real Andy, Mostyn is out of there!

Just puzzled by this statement by Mr Mostyn
"What we've done is we've brought the football club through its darkest days to where we are today."
Where we are today is 15 points adrift at the bottom of League Two!!!. That is where we are today!!!. I do not seem to recall us being in this position at any time in the past.
How can we be through our darkest days!!!????!!!. We are very much still in them right up to our necks.

Today,I am retaining my optimism and supporting the thoughts of John Coombes & the response of"clinkers" of Alton. What we really need now is some support from the Football League in scrapping the rule on points deduction. Quite obviously people will be discouraged in supporting a team where 10 to 15 points are deducted at start of season, thereby reducing income to the club.
In my experience, people will always support a winning team, regardless of division, but will they do so when such a disadvantage is placed on their team through absolutely no fault of theirs or the players.??? We should petition for this rule to be rescinded and ask for more help to this end, to come from the Media. There must be a better way, I see no
sense at all in the rule, and would be grateful to anyone who could give me an explanation as to why it was ever introduced.

I may be feeling cautious about the new owners but I back the team to give their all and Bond, he was the best thing to come out of last night, what we need is support of the players and not the usual nonsense we get from you.

So perhaps its not only us who are wary of the pairs ability to run the Club. I may be wrong but if thats the case it shows a sensible approach to protecting the Club from the previous mismangement . So everyone wins.

Mr Griffiths the way it was explained to me and I happily stand to be corrected if need be is that it stems from actions by QPR a few years back. They went into admin thereby ridding themselves of debt but at the same time were still making big money signings and paying good wages as a result of supposed supporter donations. The penalty was bought in as a way to discourage other clubs following suit.

I am very grateful to "Jem in Adelaide"for his explanation as to how the points deduction rule was explained to him, and I can well understand that some penalty should be due.Would it not be better to seek out the perpetrators of the misdemenours, rather than punish the innocent players & supporters.?
